The Treasury Department has stopped nearly $100 million in taxpayer money from being sent to deceased individuals after implementing an expanded payment verification system designed to prevent fraud and improper government spending. The effort is being hailed by the Trump administration as a major step toward strengthening oversight of federal payments.
Since March 2025, the Treasury’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service has screened roughly 885 million federal payments totaling nearly $2.7 trillion. During that review, officials identified more than 4,900 payments worth approximately $99 million that were linked to deceased recipients before the money was distributed.
Rather than allowing the funds to go out, Treasury intercepted the payments and returned them to the originating federal agencies for additional review. Officials said payments associated with deceased individuals are often indicators of fraud or administrative errors that should be investigated before taxpayer dollars are released.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the initiative fulfills one of President Trump‘s key promises to crack down on waste, fraud and abuse throughout the federal government. He credited the expanded verification systems and Vice President JD Vance’s Task Force to Eliminate Fraud with helping ensure federal dollars reach only their intended recipients.
The department expanded its use of the federal Do Not Pay program, which verifies recipient identity, eligibility and banking information before payments are issued. Treasury also gained permanent access to the Social Security Administration’s Full Death Master File after President Trump signed the Ending Improper Payments to Deceased People Act into law earlier this year.
Treasury estimates the enhanced safeguards will generate approximately $330 million in net savings by preventing improper payments in the future. Officials said they will continue modernizing the federal payment system and strengthening fraud detection measures to better protect taxpayer dollars.
