President Donald Trump is urging Senate Majority Leader John Thune to keep lawmakers in Washington until Republicans pass the SAVE America Act or eliminate the legislative filibuster blocking the election integrity measure.
Trump issued the demand in a Truth Social post as the Senate prepared to leave Washington for its summer recess. He argued that Republicans should not abandon the capital without completing one of the party’s most important legislative priorities ahead of the November midterm elections.
“The Senate shouldn’t be doing ANYTHING until we pass the SAVE America Act,” Trump wrote. He also renewed his call for Republicans to terminate the filibuster, which generally requires legislation to receive 60 votes before advancing through the chamber.
The House has already approved the Trump-backed legislation, which would require proof of citizenship when registering to vote and photo identification when casting a ballot. Supporters say the requirements are common-sense safeguards that would strengthen public confidence in American elections.
The measure has stalled in the Senate because Republicans do not currently have the 60 votes needed to overcome Democratic opposition. Thune supports the legislation but has warned that the votes are not there to pass it under the Senate’s existing rules.
Trump has argued that Republicans should end the filibuster rather than allow Democrats to repeatedly block the agenda voters elected the GOP to deliver. He said removing the procedural obstacle would allow Republicans to approve voter protections and other major conservative priorities with a simple majority.
Thune has resisted calls to abolish the filibuster, warning that Democrats could use the same power against Republicans when they regain control of the Senate. The majority leader has instead focused on government funding negotiations ahead of the September 30 deadline, when federal funding is scheduled to expire.
Republican frustration with the Senate’s slow pace has continued to grow. Sen. John Kennedy has accused Thune of being too cautious and warned that Republicans are running out of time to pass President Trump’s agenda before voters head to the polls.
Trump’s message leaves Senate Republicans with a clear choice: remain in Washington and pass the election security legislation, or change the rules preventing the Republican majority from delivering the policies it promised the American people.
