Activists Protest Against Airliner Avelo’s Partnership with ICE

Several local activist communities such as the Immigrant Advocacy Board, Indivisible City Group, and the City Chapter of Progressive Democrats of America, assembled at the approach to popular tourist destination, Wrightsville Beach. The central message was to urge holidaymakers to make ethical travel decisions. They selected this location with a strategic intention; to affect the most number of travelers passing through. The primary gripe was the agreement that Avelo, an airliner, established with the U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement early this year to endorse flights responsible for deportation.

The protest’s organizer highlighted the county’s financial contributions towards Avelo’s campaigns to promote tourism spots, including Wilmington. The goal was to raise awareness among potential passengers about the ‘hidden cost’ of Avelo’s cheap ticket offer—its involvement in human rights issues. Avelo Airlines, a cost-effective carrier, operates in 23 American states. The airliner inaugurated a new operating center in Wilmington in April.

Since the establishment of its operational base, Wilmington has witnessed a steep rise in demonstrations. Avelo drew its first form of public contention through a protest initiated in front of the airport in May. This week marked a significant shift in the protest’s dynamics as it transitioned into a national campaign. The idea is to apply commercial pressure on Avelo for deciding to collaborate in deportation operations.

The national-wide campaign is gaining momentum, with cities served by Avelo undergoing a wave of protests. One participant enlarged the cause by elaborating, ‘Avelo Airlines, a commercial carrier, is the sole airline in the commercial sector that holds a contract with ICE. They are operating deportation flights from Arizona to El Salvador. We hope to deter potential clients through boycott calls.’ Despite the lack of consensus on migration matters and the challenge in shifting perspectives, local and national activists are urging passengers to rethink their airline preference.

One demonstrator noted the campaign’s growing impact, sharing, ‘It appears that our efforts are getting traction. A few weeks ago, Avelo had to abandon some of its flights and reduce some of its routes, although this did not impact Wilmington.’ The activists aim to effectuate considerable alterations locally through these persistent protests.

Despite the ongoing protest against Avelo’s partnership with ICE, Avelo maintains its stand, citing commercial stability as its priority. In an attempt to uncover more details about Avelo’s partnership with ICE, a steering committee member from one of the advocacy groups sought public records from the New Hanover County Airport Authority.

After an extended period, the Deputy Airport Director replied, stating that the Airport Authority hadn’t allocated specific funds to Avelo, nor approved any budget adjustments for the company. He provided a copy of Avelo’s lease agreement, stating it to be a ‘standard across all airlines operating at ILM’. He also shared the authority’s incentive program, a universal offering for all airliners.

Despite these specific queries and replies, the Deputy Airport Director confirmed, through a series of email correspondences, that local marketing funding had been indeed utilized to endorse Avelo flights and the ILM Airport since the company began its operational phase.

Undoubtedly, Avelo’s operations have left an indelible mark on the local economy. One demonstrator expressed scepticism towards Avelo’s contribution to the tourism revenue of $1.1 billion in 2023 in New Hanover County. He deemed it hard to believe given that the annual GDP for the county was less than $20 billion in the most recent financial year.

The protestor redirected the discussion towards the concrete ethical dilemma surrounding Avelo’s involvement in deportation operations. He questioned whether local stakeholders should turn a blind eye towards Avelo’s actions simply due to the economic advantages stemming from their operations. What is the moral price we’re willing to pay to let these deportation flights continue?

This case reiterates the need to scrutinize corporate practices beyond the economic lens, specifically addressing ethical implications. This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the integral role companies play in shaping societal norms and contributing to human rights standards.
