ALERT: Pentagon Prepares To Deploy ‘Killer Robots’ On Humans

According to a story published by the New York Times, the United States government is actively contemplating the deployment of artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) capable of independently determining the necessity of lethal force against human targets.

According to the Times, there is an ongoing development of lethal autonomous weapons utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) for target selection by countries including the United States, China, and Israel.

As per the analysis of detractors, the potential implementation of autonomous weapons, sometimes referred to as “killer robots,” would be a disconcerting advancement, since it would delegate decisions regarding life and death on the battlefield to machines that had limited or no human supervision.

A number of states are urging the United states to adopt a legally binding resolution that would restrict the utilization of autonomous lethal drones. Nevertheless, the United States, along with several other countries including Russia, Australia, and Israel, are actively opposing this proposed measure.

According to Alexander Kmentt, Austria’s principal negotiator on the matter, “This is really one of the most significant inflection points for humanity.” In the interview he continued, “What’s the role of human beings in the use of force — it’s an absolutely fundamental security issue, a legal issue and an ethical issue.”

As per a notice issued earlier this year, the Department of Defense is currently engaged in the development and implementation of large-scale deployments of numerous drones equipped with artificial intelligence capabilities.

During an address in August, Kathleen Hicks, the Deputy Secretary of Defense of the United States, asserted that “We’ll counter the PLA’s mass with mass of our own, but ours will be harder to plan for, harder to hit, harder to beat.”

According to The Times, Frank Kendall, the Secretary of the Air Force, emphasized the necessity for AI drones to possess the capacity to make fatal determinations while operating under human oversight.

According to him, “Individual decisions versus not doing individual decisions is the difference between winning and losing — and you’re not going to lose.”

“I don’t think people we would be up against would do that, and it would give them a huge advantage if we put that limitation on ourselves.”

In October, Ukraine employed AI-controlled unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) during its confrontation with Russia, as reported by The New Scientist. However, the impact of these UAVs on human casualties remains undisclosed.

On Monday, a video presentation will be conducted by Stuart Russell, a distinguished AI scientist from the University of California, Berkeley, together with other experts. This event is organized by the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots and will take place at the United Nations Convention on Conventional Weapons.

The advertisement provides a cautionary statement, asserting “Machines don’t see us as people, just another piece of code to be processed and sorted. From smart homes to the use of robot dogs by police enforcement, A.I. technologies and automated decision-making are now playing a significant role in our lives. At the extreme end of the spectrum of automation lie killer robots.”

“Killer robots don’t just appear – we create them,” the campaign warned. “If we allow this dehumanisation we will struggle to protect ourselves from machine decision-making in other areas of our lives. We need to prohibit autonomous weapons systems that would be used against people, to prevent this slide to digital dehumanisation.”

According to Russell, the utilization and production of autonomous weaponry, exemplified by drones, tanks, and automated machine guns, will have severe detrimental effects on both human security and freedom. Furthermore, he asserts that the opportunity to impede their advancement is swiftly diminishing.

The technology depicted in the film represents a convergence of pre-existing capabilities. This phenomenon does not fall under the genre of science fiction. According to Russell, “The technology illustrated in the film is simply an integration of existing capabilities. It is not science fiction. In fact, it is easier to achieve than self-driving cars, which require far higher standards of performance.”

The Campaign to Ban Killer Robots further highlights concerns regarding the potential proliferation of autonomous weapons due to them being “relatively cheap to manufacture, critics fear that autonomous weapons could be mass produced and fall into the hands of rogue nations or terrorists who could use them to suppress populations and wreak havoc, as the movie portrays.”

“A treaty banning autonomous weapons would prevent large-scale manufacturing of the technology,” BKR asserted. “It would also provide a framework to police nations working on the technology, and the spread of dual-use devices and software such as quadcopters and target recognition algorithms.”

“Professional codes of ethics should also disallow the development of machines that can decide to kill a human,” Russell added.
