Alleged Abduction and Homicide of Minnesota Transgender Male Unravels in New York

A serious case involving the alleged abduction and homicide of a 24-year-old transgendered male from Minnesota is unfolding in New York, where authorities have taken five individuals into custody. According to the New York State Police, the victim is believed to be Sam Nordquist, who had been reported missing since February 9 based on a concern raised by his family.

Investigators discovered human remnants presumed to be Nordquist’s on February 13, located in a field within Yates County – a region approximately 50 miles southeast from the city of Rochester. This grim finding led them into a deeper probe into the circumstances of Nordquist’s disappearance and ultimate demise.

The ensuing police work revealed unsettling details about Nordquist’s final weeks. Detectives found compelling evidence that suggested that he endured progressive physical maltreatment stretching from December 2024 right up to February 2025. It became clear that after this brutal and continuous attack, his life was taken.

In what appears to be an effort to hide their heinous act, the assailants relocated the body of Nordquist, adding a layer to their already gruesome crime. Following their concerted investigation and analysis of gathered forensic evidence, police proceeded to make arrests in connection with this horrifying instance of violent crime.

Five individuals, whose ages span from 19 to 38 years, have been apprehended and subsequently indicted for second-degree murder, exhibiting depraved indifference. Those in police custody include Precious Arzuaga, 38; Jennifer A. Quijano, 30; Kyle Sage, 33; Patrick A. Goodwin, 30; and Emily Motyka, 19.

The investigative team grapples with the task of unraveling the connections that tie Nordquist to the group of five suspects. The true nature of their relationship with the victim and each other is an aspect that remains under enquiry.

Following their arrest, they faced arraignment and are now retained at the Ontario County Jail, with bail being denied. The charges they face are serious, posing the potential for each of them to receive a sentence anywhere within the range of 15 years to a lifetime behind bars, contingent upon conviction.

Linda Nordquist, Sam’s mother, remembers her son as a kind soul filled with compassion. She emotionally expressed that ‘Sam had a heart of gold and wouldn’t hurt anybody.’ Her recount paints a picture of a loving son lost to a senseless act of violence.

Sam was celebrated as a fervent animal enthusiast and had dedicated part of his life to societal contribution through his work at a residential facility supporting vulnerable adults. He was a resident of Oakdale, Minnesota, sharing a home with his mother.

In the wake of the death, The Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office has been commissioned to carry out an autopsy on Nordquist’s remains. This procedure is deemed necessary to help determine and confirm the precise cause of his unfortunate death.

In an attempt to piece together Nordquist’s last known activities, investigators unearthed that he made a trip to New York in September. His intended purpose was reportedly to meet an ‘online girlfriend,’ as per a credible GoFundMe page established by his family, following his disappearance.

His family and friends had last been in contact with him on January 1, after which their connection with him abruptly ended, adding to their fears and concerns. An aspect of uncertainty and mystery shrouds the series of events following this cut in communication with Sam.

Authorities are looking at all angles of this case. They haven’t discarded the possibility of categorizing Nordquist’s murder as a hate crime, and the prospect of future arrests hasn’t been ruled out either. Their primary focus remains on uncovering the underlying motives and circumstances related to this malevolent act.

In the prior year of 2023, disturbingly, there were reported 35 homicide cases involving victims identified as ‘transgender or gender-expansive people.’ These alarming statistics are a grim reminder of the violence that still plagues our society.

Following the news of Nordquist’s death, several Rochester City Council members stepped up to express their regret and extend their condolences to the grieving family. The incident has stirred a collective sense of loss, eliciting both local and wide-scale empathy.

In a collaborated statement, they also pledged their unwavering support to the transgender community, affirming their commitment to ensure a more accepting and inclusive environment, a cause that seeks to abate such violent incidents and protect vulnerable demographics.
