Amari Cooper Enters Free Agency: A Prospect for Washington Football Team

Last year, there were strong indications that the Washington Football Team was seriously interested in acquiring free agent wide receiver Amari Cooper. This interest was sparked during Ron Rivera’s initial year in charge, with ambitions to team up Cooper with Terry McLaurin. However, Cooper made a decision to remain with the Dallas Cowboys via a five-year contract extension worth $100 million. This agreement was set to keep him with the Cowboys through 2022.

In an interesting twist of events, Cooper was then traded to the Cleveland Browns later in 2022. Come October, the Browns exchanged Cooper’s talents with the Buffalo Bills. Regardless of Buffalo’s desperate search for a wide receiver who can contribute substantially to their team, Cooper’s performance was notably below par.

Fast forward to the present, and Cooper has once again reached free agency. At just 30 years old and with a decade of NFL experience behind him, there’s a lot that he can still bring to the right team. His birthday is not up until June, giving him plenty of time to feed off the remaining gas in his tank before he turns 31.

Cooper moving to Washington presents a prospective scenario where he could potentially bolster their wide receiver group. This would see him play alongside and complement the likes of Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel, forming a potentially formidable veteran trio in Washington.

However, it isn’t as straightforward as it appears. There are doubts around Cooper’s future in the NFL, with insinuations from an offensive coach from one of his previous teams during the NFL combine hinting that Cooper might be close to the end of his career.

An objective scrutiny at Cooper’s 2023 season where he delivered a solid performance for the Browns, followed by a rather subpar output last season, raises some serious questions. The Bills still have a requirement for good receivers to support MVP Josh Allen and yet, they chose to let Cooper go, which speaks volumes about their assessment of him.

Washington is in considerable need for more depth in their wide receiver department. However, they might be more inclined to go for a more affordable and speedy option as opposed to Cooper. It’s likely they would target a player who wouldn’t demand a significant amount of touch considering McLaurin and Samuel are already ahead in the pecking order.
