AMD’s Ryzen 9000X3D CPUs Promises 1000 FPS Gaming Experience

AMD recently declared that by merging top-of-the-line GPUs with the new Ryzen 9000X3D CPUs, gamers could achieve an impressive 1000 FPS in several popular eSports games. Certain eSports games such as Valorant and CS2 have been known to reach between 600-700 FPS, making the leap to 1000 FPS is no small accomplishment. This feat isn’t easily accessible – it calls for a robust CPU to make this quantum jump in operational speed.

A couple of years ago, the gaming community saw an instance where a Liquid Nitrogen-cooled Core i9 14900K, in combination with an RTX 4090, could attain the illustrious 1000 FPS while running CS2. This experience emphasizes the requirement for a daunting set-up to make such gaming performance realities. CPUs like Ryzen 9000X3D, however, provide a pathway to even higher, smoother frame rates than gamers were accustomed to.

On a more relatable note, most gaming setups with Ryzen 9800X3D or 9950X3D, when associated with either RTX 5080 or 5090, achieve a frame rate that oscillates between 600-700 FPS. But AMD forwards the assertion that by dialing in certain settings, these systems can push the envelope to hit the 1000 FPS mark across not just a single game, but as many as six distinct eSport titles.

To showcase the potential of their hardware, AMD has prepared an informative infographic elucidating this scenario. More specifically, AMD claims that three separate models from their Ryzen 9000X3D CPU range have the capability to unlock the elusive 1000 FPS goal in various games. The trio includes the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, the desktop Ryzen 9 9950X3D, and the laptop-focused Ryzen 9 9955HX3D.

The hardware setup required to achieve this performance level is not insignificant, however. AMD’s testing environment included Windows 11 OS (version 24H2), with Virtualization-based security (VBS) and AMD’s own Smart Access Memory (SAM) turned off. When suited with GPUs such as GeForce RTX 5080 or GeForce RTX 5090D, all six games mentioned were capable of soaring to 1000 FPS.

Particular attention was given to the memory configuration. The memory was set to clock at 6000 MT/s at CL30, while the resolution was firmly pegged at 1080p. Of note, the Radeon RX 9070 XT was included in the benchmark, but it only succeeded in guiding two games to the ambitious 1000 FPS threshold, which is a notable achievement but requires separate validation.

Contrary to intuition, the prospect of attaining the 1000 FPS achievement isn’t entirely practical. As of now, the market has yet to offer gamers displays that could fully utilize such a high frame rate. The highest refresh rate monitors currently reported sit at a still staggering 750Hz, intimating the wait before we experience 1000 Hz gaming monitors.

Notably, while AMD included the mobile targeted Ryzen 9 9955HX3D in its list of CPUs capable of achieving 1000 FPS, the specific test results utilizing this chip were not disclosed. By all technical accounts, the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D should perform comparably to its desktop counterparts.

However, the impracticality of achieving such high FPS with a mobile CPU becomes evident considering the limited refresh rate of laptop displays. Gaming laptops with ultra-high refresh rate monitors are not a common sighting, lessening the utility of running games at 1000 FPS on such devices. Thus, while it remains a technological showcase, the real-world gaming implications are currently more limited.
