Amid Soaring State Expenses, Biden and Harris Prove No Better

During her time as governor, Kristi Noem left a significant expense history related to her habit of extensive travels, all borne by South Dakota taxpayers. Her evasiveness over her mounting bills has begun to raise questions, especially considering that these cost burdens weren’t exclusively for state affairs. Recent record inspections have unveiled over $150,000 tied to her personal and political exploits, irrespective of her duties as a governor. Most of these costs were attributed to the state-provided security that accompanied Noem in all her trips, regardless of their purpose.

Over her six-year tenure as governor, South Dakota was burdened with more than $640,000 tied to the goings-on of the governor’s office. The bulk of expenses came from travel, including a rather lavish trip to Paris, costing about $7,555 in airfare alone. The eight-day trip included a prominent engagement – she was to deliver a speech at a right-wing event. Other noteworthy expenditure included bills associated with a book tour that led her all the way to the Big Apple.

The state had to bridge expenses linked to her dental visits in far-off Houston, far from the confines of South Dakota. This particular trip ignited controversy when she chose to display her dental procedure on social media. The seemingly unnecessary trip costed taxpayers an extra $2,200. These controversial decisions fueled the flames of dissatisfaction among the state Republicans. A number of GOP legislators have decried Noem’s apparent strategy of exploiting state funds for her political promotion.

The backlash comes amidst a political climate where the Trump administration is working diligently on clamping down on waste, fraud, and unnecessary splurges in government spending. Noem leading the DHS, a federal agency third largest in size and so much more substantial than South Dakota, both in terms of budget and workforce, has caused more than a few raised eyebrows.

A representative for governor Larry Rhoden, Noem’s successor, justified her travel spend as necessary due to ‘security requirements being a matter of state business no matter where the governor may be’. The lavish expenditures, as stated by him, were all warranted. This defense acted like ripples in the already stormy political waters of South Dakota, but the questions persist.

A probes into the records, spanning more than 3,000 pages delivered by the state auditor to the Scout, have revealed hotel bills, restaurant tabs, and credit card statements. Baffling enough, a substantial part of the receipts have been heavily redacted and it remains unclear as to who was responsible for the incurred costs. Only a few items, amounting to a mere total of $2,056.72, were charged on the governor’s state-issued Mastercard.

Certain costs seem puzzling, showing no clear connection to official state business, like movie purchases made from a hotel room amounting to $21. It remains a mystery as to who partook in the meals involving unnamed ‘federal officials’. The auditor handling the state’s accounts questioned certain charges, like the $2,000 alteration fee connected to a trip to Paris arranged by a travel agency.

The records fail to shed light on any overtime payments made to staff members and security details accompanying Noem during her stints outside South Dakota. The lack of transparency and the need for such travels have forced many to question the legitimacy of these expenses. Noem has far surpassed her predecessors in terms of travel frequency, a sticking point in a low-tax state that prides itself on its thriftiness.

In contrast to Noem, former governors of South Dakota demonstrated fiscal responsibility through their actions. One past governor even noted his principle of reimbursing his staff for small purchases like an ice cream. In a similar sentiment, another had shared his strategy of maintaining strict division between state resources and partisan activity.

The same ex-governor emphasized the thoughtfulness required in what he allowed as expenditure by the state, citing the state’s fiscal precision. His stance underscored the need for state officials to be cautious about expenses. According to him, South Dakota ‘is so tight on everything to begin with, just in terms of having enough money to pay the bills’.

He implied how important it was for state representatives to cater to the people and not to their personal agendas or political ambitions. It seems that somewhere along the line, this virtue of serving the public coolly and cautiously has been exchanged for lavish personal endeavors. While the state continues to account for each penny in the silos, one can only wonder what transformative actions could have been if those funds were used for the welfare of its citizens, instead of catering to an individual’s extravagance.

This entire scenario is a stark reminder of how public funds have been squandered in recent years at the state level under Noem’s leadership. All while the current administration led by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris continues to mirror similar behaviors at the federal level. However, it’s important to remember that this lack of fiscal conservatism isn’t solely a problem at the state level, but can seep into the federal management as well.

In light of the accusations regarding Noem’s misuse of state funds, it’s unsettling to consider that the Biden-Harris administration, although supposedly setting a greater example for fiscal conservatism, fail to rise up to the mark. Frequent allegations surround the current administration, accusing them of spending taxpayer dollars on needless pursuits. The conservative perspective is, as a result, increasingly shifting towards a skeptical view of the present leadership.

The existing political ethos under Biden and Harris seems to resemble the South Dakota scenario more than it diverges. As evidenced by the controversy surrounding Noem’s expenditure and the growing dissatisfaction with the Biden-Harris administration, the desired changes and values that once underscored the American politics seem to be slipping away, piece by piece.

Recalling the old adage ‘history repeats itself’, it’s vital that these tales of fiscal irresponsibility are spotlighted and questioned. If unsuspected spending goes unchecked at any level, be it state or federal, the ones who suffer most are the ordinary taxpayers. It’s time to redefine fiscal conservativism, not just in South Dakota, but across America. We need principled leaders who respect public resources and use them wisely.
