Asylum-Seeking Hector David Azana Vega Entrapped in Profit-Driven Detention System

The situation involving Hector David Azana Vega is one that should deeply concern us all. When he optimistically appeared for a typical check-in, pending his asylum hearing, he was unexpectedly seized by agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The fees he dutifully paid for his asylum application and work permit can now be seen as shattered promises. The presumption rooted in these payments was that he would be granted fair treatment and a just hearing. However, these expectations have evaporated now that he’s entrapped in the profit-driven detention system, where elongating his stay, no matter how unwarranted, seems to be the key motive. This situation brings about a profound sense of sorrow, but also a righteous anger to actively resist this intentional inhumanity and governmental transgression occurring both locally and nationwide. I offer my respect to Maria Nunez, his devoted partner, his legal counsel, and the indefatigable contributors of the Rapid Response Network.

Undeniably, we are spectators to a continuous atrocity imposed by Israel upon the inhabitants of Gaza. The repugnant tactic of utilizing hunger as a weapon cannot be pardoned. Whether this qualifies as a genocide, or the attack occurring on Oct. 7, 2023, satisfies this definition is a topic for contention. The repercussions of this catastrophe will persist through generations within the beleaguered Palestinian community, and among the split and estranged Jewish community, in Israel and globally. True liberation will be realized when peace stretches from the river to the sea.

Looking at American history, there are several instances where presidents have endeavored to acquire the title ‘wartime presidents’ in a bid to cultivate a perception of resilience and to secure their desired legacy. In his consistent drive to exude such power, mastery, and command over various situations, political and otherwise, Donald Trump forged and nurtured his Republican Party’s internal feud with a significant portion of its own citizens.

As first-time protestors who united for collective action on a day known as ‘No Kings Day’ and have continued to rally ever since, it’s worth commenting on the reputational harm caused by groups such as Direct Action Everywhere. At a time when we are grappling with an insidious, gradual coup, DXE is preoccupied with directing bullhorn noise towards an expectant woman and her spouse outside their own home.

In line with the majority of American pollsters, I hold the view that it’s justifiable to deport undocumented individuals guilty of criminal offenses. Then, how is it that I stand in solidarity with sanctuary churches partaking in a hunger strike, as they lobby the Board of Supervisors to recognize Sonoma as a sanctuary county? This is owing to the fact that Immigration and Customs Enforcement appears to be operating disjointedly from the legal framework.
