An amusing incident involving Belal Muhammad, the reigning UFC welterweight champion, took place at UFC 310, wiping the smile off of Conor McGregor’s face. When Muhammad, poised to defend his title for the first time in the forthcoming weekend, found himself unable to enter the Octagon at UFC 310 in Las Vegas, the situation caused quite a stir.
Muhammad, who had previously been scheduled to battle against Shavkat Rakhmonov in the primary event of the evening, had withdrawn due to a serious foot infection. Expectations were high for Muhammad to confront Rakhmanov following his squeaky-tight victory over Ian Machado Garry in the celebrated co-main event of UFC 310.
This particular fight had been known as a title eliminator for the welterweight division with the winner getting the opportunity to challenge Muhammad for the 170lb title. After Rakhmonov emerged victorious, Muhammad was invited to the Octagon for an anticipated face-off with the Kazakhstan fighter.
Yet, as Muhammad attempted to do so, he faced unforeseen hurdles. Joe Rogan, who was interviewing Rakhmonov at the time, pointed out, ‘Security doesn’t recognize him as the champion. They should let him in.’ He was referring to the quirky predicament Muhammad found himself in, trying to gain admittance to his own match’s locale.
McGregor, a former two-division UFC titleholder, leapt at the chance to mock the incident with his well-known cutting wit. ‘What a laugh! The guard doesn’t even recognize the champ,’ McGregor quipped, unable to suppress his amusement. His comments were sharply directed at Muhammad, with whom he shares an intense rivalry.
‘Remember The Name’ Muhammad had claimed his title by vanquishing Leon Edwards the previous July. His initial title defense has been scheduled for the weekend in Montreal at UFC 315. In an ironic twist, Muhammad found himself stymied by a security officer, instigating yet another poke from McGregor.
McGregor’s comments continued to escalate, ‘Who’s this nobody?’ quoting the uninformed security officer, ‘I can’t believe they even let you in. They hardly know you are the champion.’
Circumstances grew even more complicated when Rakhmonov suffered an injury during his match with Garry, making him unable to compete for the welterweight championship the following month. Muhammad consequently found himself set to defend his title against Jack Della Maddalena, his debut title defense scheduled at UFC 315 in Montreal, Canada.
This contest serves as the main event in an exciting card, co-headlining with another UFC title match featuring Valentina Shevchenko and Manon Fiorot. The card will also mark the comeback of Jose Aldo as he faces Aiemann Zahabi.
Muhammad has spoken about using MMA legend Georges St-Pierre’s successful title reign as his motivation for his upcoming fight in Montreal, which is the birthplace of the legendary fighter. ‘I find it intriguing to fight in GSP’s home city, and I presume he will be there,’ Muhammad remarked before his fight.
Before becoming a part of UFC, Muhammad traveled all the way to Montreal in the hopes of training alongside St-Pierre at Tristar. While he didn’t meet GSP, he had the chance to train under the guidance of Firas Zahabi, enabling him to learn and seek advice.
The fact that I’m fighting in his stadium, with the belt of his division, is going to be an amazing experience,’ he added. ‘It’s like a dream come true to share the same space with the person who is considered the greatest in your weight range, someone I’ve always admired and emulated.
St-Pierre held the UFC welterweight championship for almost a decade, making his mark upon the sport and inspiring fighters like Muhammad. GSP retired as the reigning champion of the 170lb division after he submitted British fighter Michael Bisping at UFC 217 in November of 2017.
The incident at UFC 310, while a moment of humor, underscores persistent rivalries and the power dynamics of MMA. As Muhammad looks ahead to his first title defense, he draws inspiration from champions past, using humor and adversities to fuel his journey forward in the demanding yet rewarding world of UFC.
