Despite persistently disassociating himself from the Project 2025 while on his campaign voyage, substantial similarities have been noticed between this initiative and President Donald Trump’s secondary stint in office. The likeness caught people’s attention due to the initiatives bold declaration for a significant cutback and alteration of the federal government’s scope. There was considerable hullabaloo about Project 2025 in the months leading up to the November elections. Trump addressed the topic at the September debate against the underwhelming former Vice President Kamala Harris, vocalizing he had ‘zero hand in Project 2025.’ Yet, within the first 100 days of his second term, close to 45% of Trump’s executive orders closely reflect the advisory policy recommendations suggested by none other than Project 2025.
Invention of the Project 2025 initiative can be credited to the conservative thought vault, The Heritage Foundation. The foundation’s brainchild aids in setting a route for the policies that should be focus of the subsequent conservative president. Project 2025 saw its inception in 2022 and following its successful initiation; the principal policy guidebook—titled ‘Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise’—was published. However, tarif-related executive orders were excluded from the policy recommendations synching analysis due to conflicting recommendations present in the Project 2025 on this matter. Out of the 126 non-tarif executive orders, 56 carried policy recommendations analogue to those of Project 2025.
A substantial overlapping point between Trump’s executive orders and Project 2025 is on matters of government reformation, accountability, and deregulation. Although Project 2025 doesn’t outwardly call for the Department of Government Efficiency’s constitution, it still favors numerous government workforce modifications and size-reducing changes that Trump’s executive orders have set in motion. The reinstatement of measures facilitating federal employee termination, instructions for agencies to cut back costs, and the unfolding demolition of the Department of Education — are all policies from Project 2025 impressively mirrored in Trump’s reign.
Synchronicity has also been observed between Project 2025 and Trump on various policies that aim to energize domestic energy production, reinforce immigration law enforcement and deregulations. However, there is lack of congruency on certain critical subjects. One of them being TikTok and tariff policies. Here, Project 2025 upholds an outright prohibition of TikTok, citing national security threats, but Trump hasn’t made a definitive decision on TikTok, and has only put off its ban in the U.S.
Even though shared ideas can be seen between the executive orders of Trump and Project 2025, the degree to which they influence each other is still indistinct. The intention to shape political policy was the driving force behind the creation of Project 2025. Its creation adds to the multitude of similar proposals delivered by conservative policy associations. It is noteworthy that continuous efforts are on to propagate a conservative agenda.
