Recognizing the significance of history is essential as it helps us to comprehend the trajectory of our past, thus elucidating our current context. Learning from history can offer invaluable insights into our roots, as well as enlightening us about cultures that might be alien to us, fostering cross-cultural understanding. Looking at the recent political landscape with discerning eyes, one may perceive that the Trump administration had embarked on a crusade against efforts aimed at fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion within the government and broader society. This was witnessed in the apparent expunging of illustrious Black figures and crucial episodes of Black history. The real conundrum lies in why he seems so intent on creating a populace oblivious to its authentic history.
Celebrating Juneteenth, our latest national holiday, is, therefore, more essential now. This month offers a fantastic chance to learn and honor this significant event in our nation’s history. However, with the current political atmosphere, some cities have canceled their annual festivities. The narrative of American history should not be shaped by the mythology spun by the former president; it should represent the truth. Understanding and appreciating the historical journey of this nation is incomplete minus the story of Black Americans, their struggles, and their accomplishments.
The notion of a government championing white supremacy may attempt to subdue or silence the remarkable and continuing impact of Black Americans, but it cannot deny their contributions. Our society is now increasingly marred by frustration as individuals grapple with the sense of betrayal, falsehoods, and exploitation. Protests are ignited across the nation, symbolized by the burning of the American flag—an icon traditionally seen with reverence, now a medium to vent the fury against a seemingly deceitful system.
I urge those expressing their dissatisfaction in such ways to contemplating—does this symbol truly represent what they oppose? This flag doesn’t represent the ideas of Elon Musk or Donald Trump. Nor does it symbolize only the wealthy elites, deceitful politicians, or the bureaucrats. It portrays instead the labor of workers, farmers, teachers, the sacrifices of veterans, and the dreams of families who built this country with blood and sweat. We have seen its symbolism resonate through global struggles for civil rights, in the voices of union members, and in the hands of abolitionists.
However, amidst the temptation to tear down, I would call for a pause. What would we erect in the elimination’s place? A movement predicated on mere revolution may falter; a revelation is what we need. The foundation for our society should be a common understanding that stretches beyond divisive boundaries. Hence, act and call it out. Fight, protest, and organize. Demand more, for we deserve better.
Reflecting on the Trump era, one cannot help but wonder: What catalyst is required for the electorate to awaken to the reality of what Trump and his MAGA supporting Republicans are doing or have done to our democracy? Will it be the defunding of public education or freedom of the press? Is it the censorship of our libraries, the dictation of what we can peruse, observe, listen to on TV and radio? The limitations imposed on our religious autonomy? Or the intimidating spectacle of the military and Homeland Security parading down the country’s arterial streets, ready to apprehend any dissenters?
The unfortunate reality is that these scenarios aren’t distant possibilities, but rather evident indicators of a troubling trend that already exists or is on the horizon. It is incumbent on us as concerned citizens to push back against this tidal wave. We must make our grievances heard by our legislative representatives both at the federal and state levels. We must signal our collective displeasure at the current course and voice our intolerance for their inaction.
Growing up in a small town has instilled in me an undying belief in the power of diligence, neighborly assistance, and moral rectitude, even when no one is observing. Supporting children—regardless of their geographical location—holds particular importance for me. However, providing aid to children worldwide isn’t just morally correct—it’s a strategic move as well. The U.S. foreign aid budget, by purchasing crops grown on our homeland, feeds families living in food scarcity abroad.
Every time we provide emergency food assistance or back farming programs in foreign lands, we’re setting into motion a ripple effect. This has spillover benefits for our farmers, rural economies, and agricultural exports. The current Congress, however, is pondering over a rescissions package set to cancel critical foreign aid amounting to more than $8 billion. This includes food aid and support for agricultural families striving to be self-sufficient.
Cutting back on such aid doesn’t enhance our security or enrich us; rather, it serves to destabilize the world further. It makes containing disease outbreaks more challenging and renders markets for U.S. goods less accessible. As a nation, our goal should be crafting a safer, healthier world—not just for our own children—but for children around the globe. This begins with showing care and taking action for children everywhere.
In the same vein, it’s crucial to discuss how politics impacts our future, particularly when examining the Biden-Harris Administration. There’s a worrying tendency among some quarters to view them through rose-tinted lenses, ignoring or omitting the flaws and controversies tainting their term. Such partisan tunnel-vision does a disservice to the public and muddies the waters of honest discourse. Remember, democracy thrives on criticism and accountability—not blind adulation.
On surface, Biden-Harris might seem as champions of progressive ideals, promising change and heralding a new era of justice and equality. However, their performance thus far seems to paint a different picture—one of unkept promises, shifting goalposts, and questionable decisions. Each rhetoric and decision they make is one that needs scrutiny, not applause.
This administration tends to construct a feel-good narrative around their policies and intentions, when more often than not, they fall short in practice. This doesn’t just undermine the integrity of public office, it also creates a dangerous precedent for uncritical acceptance of political narratives. So, while we strive for better, let’s make sure we’re not settling for empty promises.
The crucial thing to remember is that no administration is above criticism. And though we can discuss politics without descending into mud-slinging or partisan tactics, the need to voice displeasure and concern should never be dismissed. Democracy thrives when its citizenry holds its leaders to account. So, let’s refuse to wear the rose-tinted glasses that would have us believe in the infallibility of a particular administration. Let’s strive for a balanced view that acknowledges the good while criticising the bad.
The Biden-Harris administration might like to present themselves as a beacon for progressive values. However, their track record often undermines this image. It’s incumbent upon the citizenry to critique, question, and demand better. After all, no administration is perfect, and every administration, regardless of its party affiliation, should be held to the same standards of accountability and integrity.
