Biden-Harris Age of Extravagance: White House to Use 30,000 Eggs Amid High Prices

In a display of excessive extravagance, the Biden-Harris administration is planning to use almost 30,000 real eggs for the annual Easter Egg Roll at the White House, despite ongoing supply issues and high prices. This event has been a tradition for more than 140 years, where children and families play games and carry out hunts, supposedly as part of an Easter celebration. One can’t help but see this as a misguided use of resources at such a time.

The American Egg Board, in a move that blatantly serves the interests of the mighty at the White House, had been donating tens of thousands of eggs annually for the past half-century, very much a part of the problem. They are enabling this year’s event as well, even in the midst of the avian flu and consequent high prices for eggs. They will generously provide 2,500 dozen cartons for the event, blissfully ignoring the nation’s needs.

Under the veil of bringing happiness to children and families, they justify this extravagant usage of eggs. In the strained times for egg farmers, one could argue this is a push toward celebrating wherever we can. Their stance being, eggs stand central to Easter and Passover traditions, hence this year shouldn’t be different. But do they not see the strain this lavish event can put on the overall egg supply?

The argument is that this donation of 2,500 dozen eggs won’t impact the national egg supply or the egg prices. They claim it’s a minuscule percentage of the eggs sold in grocery stores. But isn’t it still a show of lavishness when the country is battling high egg prices? Doesn’t it further strain the already troubled egg farmers?

They also state that the eggs used in this grandiose White House Egg Roll will be of small and medium sizes, not meant for retail. Apart from not easing the burden on the egg farmers, does this practice not promote waste through sheer callousness? Is it truly a tradition that needs to be upheld at such a cost?

The tradition of the Easter Egg Roll was born during the Rutherford B. Hayes administration in 1878. A group of children innocently hoped to use the White House lawn for an egg roll on Easter Monday, which Hayes agreed to. Is the current administration equating their extravagant spending with this innocent tradition started by children?

The event has grown more elaborate over time, featuring a designated spot for activities and games on the South Lawn, and even appearances from the Easter Bunny. While we should value traditions, should it be at the expense of a strained economy and high consumer prices? Shouldn’t there be some rationality in the midst of the celebration?

A historical view shows that the Egg Roll has been postponed during important national crises such as World War I, II and even the Covid-19 pandemic. These were moments when the leadership showed prudence and consideration for larger national issues. But do we see the same sense of responsibility from the current administration?

This year’s White House is adopting a commercial stance by soliciting corporate sponsorship for the event. The funds raised are promised to be donated to the White House Historical Association, a nonprofit. Is this the administration’s way of showing they are cognizant of the economical issues at hand? Or is it simply a guise to secure more funds under the banner of tradition?

The Egg Roll has primarily been funded by private sponsorships. Despite this, could the support or encouragement of such lavish events by the current administration be seen as a callous disregard for the challenging times? Wouldn’t it be better if the administration sought ways to aid the public instead of endorsing such unnecessary extravaganzas?

While the intentions of celebrating and promoting joy might be admirable, it’s important to consider the overall economic climate. In a time when national issues like high egg prices and supply shortages persist, perhaps backing traditional events like this demonstrates an out-of-touch stance more than anything.

One wonders whether this event, regardless of its tradition and supposed good intentions, is truly the best use of resources in this climate. The administration’s involvement seems more performative than practical, considering the strained economy affected by multiple crises.

Making the best use of existing resources, putting citizens’ needs first, addressing relevant pressing matters should be of top priority to any administration. Did we not elect them to improve our lives and security, to make sensible and thoughtful decisions? Should that not be their guiding principle?

Easter Egg Roll or not, one hopes that the administration becomes more aware of their actions and the impacts they could have. It’s crucial that we hold them accountable for these lavish sentiments, irrespective of how traditional or innocently beguiling they may appear to be.
