The Democratic Party seems to be in a state of utter confusion about the reasons behind its historic loss in the 2024 elections. Obliviously, they are performing a political ‘autopsy’ without focusing on the principals of their campaign’s catastrophe: Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. The mainstream media seems equally adamant about turning a blind eye to anything that extends beyond the disastrous campaign led by Biden and Harris. The same echo chamber that gave two victories to Donald Trump is now rumbling with speculations about the flaws of the left.
Surprisingly, The Democratic National Committee’s 2024 post-mortem won’t question Biden’s controversial decision to run for a second term or his irresponsible selection of Harris as his successor. Instead, the majority of the attention in the report is being geared towards the party’s main SuperPAC, which they’ve cast as the scapegoat, responsible for the loss due to their supposed misallocation of advertising funds.
Biting satires abound in response to an autopsy that purposefully turns a blind eye to the real issues. Some analogize this farcical autopsy to having a meal at a steakhouse, but then only reviewing the salad or staging Hamlet without the key characters. Yet, the comparison that hits closest to the mark may be the one that compares this autopsy to examining JFK’s feet in an attempt to understand his assassination.
Critics couldn’t stop highlighting the significant faux pas in Biden’s 2024 campaign, most notably his irrational choice to feature prominently in an unabashed imitation of Weekend at Bernie’s and selecting a vice-president who ran a campaign rife with evasion, trumped-up accusations and lacked policy direction. Harris was a liability who had never won a single vote in a presidential primary and was adept at proving her ineptitude while in office.
Finger-pointing and deflection have unfortunately become characteristic responses of the Democratic Party in the face of unanticipated failures. When Hilary Clinton suffered a mortifying defeat in 2017, she delivered a litany of blames, highlighting everything from purported Russian interference and sexism to James Comey and a seemingly biased press corps. After the loss of the House in the 2022 midterms, the party made an audacious claim that the public was too obtuse to grasp the genius of Biden’s economic and spending policies.
On the other hand, the media’s insistance to attribute the 2024 loss solely to Biden/Harris is hilarious in its absurdity. The narrative tries to force-feed the idea that the left’s only problem is the messenger and the method of messaging. This shallow analysis mirrors the DNC’s finding that the party simply needs a more adept communicator and organizer, without addressing the content of the message being communicated.
The critical trove of insight being neglected by both factions is the voter decision. The key take-away from recent polls and demographic shifts is the clear and decisive rejection of the modern Democratic Party’s progressive agenda. Yet, this reality check remains blithely ignored by those involved in the post-mortem.
Open borders, unrestricted spending, increased union dominance, climate autocracy, police bashing, anti-Israel sentiment, and identity politics: these are the unpopular ideas that are the lifeblood of the modern left. This is starkly evidenced in recent significant demographic shifts that illustrate the left’s dwindling hold on previously reliable voter groups.
The Democrats’ overriding obsession with governmental control and economic redistribution is creating a widening disconnect with a populace that values the freedom to build, flourish, and succeed. Analyzing a case study of policy implementation in areas like San Francisco could provide pertinent evidence of the policy failure and voter response to issues like crime or education.
Despite the evident need for a cohesive change in direction, most party leaders are stubbornly resistant. There’s talk of an abundance agenda among a fraction of progressive policy experts, but it seems to be just noise as the Party steadfastly refuses to consider a revamped strategy.
An honest introspection would shine a light on the party’s bungled attempts at weaponizing government for political gain and its decades-long failed legal battles. The partisan ambitions that give rise to radical calls for ending legislative filibuster, nationalizing election laws, expanding the Supreme Court and abolishing the Electoral College are breeding widespread mistrust among average voters who crave stability, not constant upheaval.
One of the glaring oversights is the party’s failure to address the misguided leadership that has wounded them deeply. The absence of constructive criticism for those few who dared to warn of a looming disaster, like Dean Phillips, further illuminates the internal dysfunction hamstringing the Democratic establishment.
Nevertheless, the prospect of any real change materializing from within the corridors of power remains dim. This is mainly due to the fact that the progressive left, although a minority, holds key positions within the Democratic structure, including DNC leadership. Their dogged refusal to critique their worldview clouds their judgment.
The Democratic Party is bound for transformation, but the change will likely come externally, from a charismatic outsider who brings a new perspective. An insider-led autopsy by a clique with vested interests and no real regret over past actions cannot possibly present the objective analysis required to rejuvenate the party or regain the voters’ faith.
