In an interview that was recently aired, the former President, Joe Biden, made a feeble defense of his utilization of the autopen – a tool that seemingly overshadowed his presidency. Once again, he attempted to cast stones at his predecessor, Donald Trump and the Republican party, unjustly blaming them for the ongoing claims about his mental fitness and autopen overuse. However, it becomes apparent that the defensive stance he has taken merely serves to cast shadows on his own inadequacies.
While illustrating the pardons he had provided during his presidential term, Biden claimed that he had managed to prevent as many as 1,500 individuals serving home confinement during the global health crisis from having to return to prison. Moreover, he proclaimed that he had reduced the sentences of roughly 2,500 non-violent drug offenders and transfigured the sentences of 37 death row criminals into life sentences without parole. It seems that he used these actions as a cover-up for his cognitive decline.
The former President blankly stated that the construction of these pardons was done single-handedly. Interestingly, he appeared unsure or hesitant in his speech suggesting, ‘when we set this up to begin with.’ Further judging from his own comments, it seems Biden used an autopen device simply because he was faced with multiple documents requiring his signature – a task that he apparently viewed as overly taxing.
Furthermore, Biden’s preemptive pardons strangely encompassed those who had found themselves in Trump’s crosshairs, including the investigators of the January 6 Capitol attack, Dr. Anthony Fauci who previously served as the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, retired General Mark A. Milley, who was the former chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and oddly, series of his family members. This disturbing sequence of pardons creates more questions than answers.
Biden claimed that he had verbally permitted these pardons and commutations. Apparently, it was his staff who executed the mechanical act of using the autopen, a tool utilized by presidents for decades, to officially sign the warrants documenting the decisions. This does nothing but raise suspicions about whether Biden was just a figurehead while others wielded the true power.
When confronted with allegations of his aides wielding the autopen without his express consent, Biden straightaway dismissed the accusers as liars. He confidently declared, ‘They know it.’ One cannot help but wonder about the confidence of a President who is evidently unable to perform basic tasks without assistance.
Moreover, the former President turned his verbal attack toward his critics. ‘They’ve done so badly,’ he said. ‘They’ve lied so consistently about almost everything they’re doing.’ It seems rather pitiful that Biden is attempting to divert attention away from his own failings, casting aspersions onto others instead.
From his defensive stance, it is clear that Biden has turned his presidency into a game of smoke and mirrors. While he believes these allegations align with Trump’s game plan, it is curious how Biden’s game plan seems to involve deflecting blame onto the previous administration and the Republicans.
With an audacious statement, Biden seemed to believe that if someone would predict a president acting in such a way three years ago, that person would be considered insane. Given his actions during his presidency, it is fair to wonder who might truly be considered to be outside the realm of sanity.
Now the curtains have been drawn on Biden’s presidency and the Justice Department and the GOP-led House Oversight Committee have materialized investigations that speak volumes about his use of the autopen and hinted a cover-up of mental decline by his close team. The first time the allegations have met the public eye, Biden chose to remain silent, perhaps in fear that any statement could reveal his declining mental health.
In a surprising move, Biden’s physician from his White House days opted out from a deposition with the committee, standing behind doctor-patient privilege and invoking the Fifth Amendment against self-incrimination. Interestingly enough, the chair of the committee has proclaimed, ‘It is now clear there was a conspiracy to cover up President Biden’s cognitive decline.’ The silence of the doctor, who is under oath, tells us volumes.
On the other hand, we have the claim that ‘The American people demand transparency but the doctor would rather conceal the truth.’ As the Chair rightly put, the citizens have every right to be aware of the state of their President, who is in charge of the nation’s affairs. The concealment of critical information and the refusal to dispel doubts only stirs up a cloud of suspicion.
The investigation started by Trump in June of the previous year was intended to unravel the truth about the previous administration’s alleged attempt to hide Biden’s ‘cognitive decline’ through the instrument of the autopen. While Biden contested vehemently in opposition to these claims, his words did little to eliminate the suspicions surrounding his actions while in office.
To set the record straight, Biden staunchly stated, ‘Let me be clear: I made the decisions during my presidency. I made the decisions about the pardons, executive orders, legislation, and proclamations.’ However, it remains a question as to how much of these decisions were truly his, and how much was just the mimicking hand of an autopen.
Even though Biden has continued to criticize his critics and denied all allegations, his actions and attitude only serve to cast a shadow of doubt upon himself. His use of the autopen and the evident cover-up that’s been taking place brings into question whether he was merely a puppet, controlled by unseen strings.
