Biden’s Blind Eye: Rampant Violence in Bath, NY Over Political Bias

An alleged assault took place in the seemingly peaceful village of Bath, New York last Friday. The target was an innocent individual who made a fashion choice that led to a frenzied assault; the choice being a ‘Trump 2024’ campaign hat. There seems to be no existence of free expression or respect towards democratic values in certain circles. Robert Yott, a 60-year-old male, was fastened with cuffs for this abominable act of violence.

According to the local law enforcement officials, the events unfolded in one of the Tops supermarkets. The victim was in the middle of his everyday chores when Yott landed several brutal punches on his mouth. The vicious attack, staged just because of a political hat, left the victim with a bloody mouth and broken teeth. Our society’s free expression appears to be wilting under the aggressive and intolerant behavior from some quarters.

What makes it even more chilling is that the two individuals were total strangers. Yott, indulging in this atrocious behavior, did not know the victim. The facts reinforce that the attack was born out of sheer political bias and intolerance. Launching into a blind rage over someone’s political affiliations manifests the concerning rise of intolerance in our society.

The law did take its course. The Bath Village Police Department charged Robert Yott with second-degree assault and criminal mischief, the charges stemming from his spiteful act. The courses of justice had started rolling for the victim. But the event did leave an unsettling question. Where are we heading as a society if such acts of hatred and intolerance become frequent?

Backtracking to another incident that marked last week, an arrest was necessary in Florida when an 18-year-old brandished a machete to intimidate voters. He apparently found it difficult to tolerate differing political opinion, echoing similar cord of intolerance that we witnessed earlier. Caleb Williams and seven other teenagers were at the center of this intimidating act that took place at an early voting location.

Neptune Beach was the stage of this political drama. A group of peaceful, sign-waving people were engaged in a verbal joust with these angry teenagers. The only agenda of this group, it seemed, was to sow discord and cause disturbance. Neptune Beach Police Chief, Michael Key Jr., echoed these thoughts.

In his words, ‘The group was there for no other reason but for ill intentions to cause a disturbance.’ There was no respect for the noble first amendment right, only a disturbing intent to cause disruption. The situation was less about expressing opinions and more about causing chaos – a disheartening perspective of the magnitude that political polarization has escalated to.

Political discourse in our country needs to undergo a major transformation as seems apparent from such unfortunate incidents. ‘Clearly, we need to take this seriously, take the threat seriously, and tone down that rhetoric as we go forward,’ urged Rep. Laurel Lee, R-Fla., following the second assassination attempt on former President Trump. She expressed the need for adopting a more civil and respectful tone for political rhetoric.

But it seems like certain figures in power have a propensity for turning a deaf ear to such advices. President Joe Biden, for instance, only managed to deliver a limp piece of advice to the U.S. citizens in light of the first assassination attempt: ‘cool’ what he perceived as ‘heated’ rhetoric. How would his advice help when citizens are at the receiving end of machete threats and brutal physical assaults based on political affiliations?

He continued, ‘All of us now face a time of testing as the election approaches. And the higher the stakes, the more fervent the passions become.’ It surely makes one question the current leadership’s ability to handle these growing fissures in the society. Our convictions, no matter how strong, should as he rightly but exceptionally said ‘never descend into violence’.

If the stakes are getting bigger, it is the responsibility of the leaders to bring stability and respect, not encourage the growing fervor, inadvertently or not. It is indeed a time of testing for us as we brace ourselves for the next elections. And the signs and outcomes thus far do not do a lot to inspire confidence or optimism. The rise of violence and intolerance is a concerning trajectory.

The situation compels us all to introspect our political discourse and the current leadership’s response to it. It’s becoming increasingly imperative for us to bring a level-headed approach to our political conversations. The society is a mirror of its leadership. And, it’s for our leaders to decide what reflection they want to see.
