Biden’s Disastrous 2024 Reelection Campaign: A Showcase of Aging Limitations

Multiple questions have arisen within the Democratic camp after President Biden’s ill-fated 2024 reelection campaign. Despite early signs of a stumbling campaign, Biden pressed on, seemingly unaware or possibly in denial about his aging limitations. At the ripe age of 82, Biden’s re-election bid was struck by profound questions about his ability to fulfill another term that could potentially see him at the helm till the age of 86.

Unveiling the confusion in his latest book, the author likens Biden’s ill-conceived bid for re-election to a Shakespearean tragedy, cloaked in delusion and denial. It was under this veil that Biden’s family and closest aides held onto the belief of his capacity to maneuver another presidential term—a belief many would argue was far removed from reality.

Approaching the climactic debate with former President Trump, Biden appeared entirely out of sorts. His performance was described as being in ‘a terrible state,’ visibly struggling to keep abreast of the campaign’s developments and exhibiting alarming signs of mental and physical fatigue.

One particular incident provides a stark illustration of his condition. Biden reportedly walked out of a debate prep session at the Aspen Lodge and made his way to the pool area. Here, in full view of his team, he sank into a lounge chair and fell into a deep sleep—a compelling visual that served as a clear indication of his dwindling stamina.

The debate represented a poignant turning point in Biden’s reelection campaign, starkly exposing the campaign’s imminent failure. Not a month after this turning point, the 82-year-old president called it quits, passing the baton onto Vice President Kamala Harris, his endorsed successor.

However, Harris’ attempt at carrying on Biden’s legacy was equally ill-fated, if not more so. Harris, unfortunately, seemed unable to provide a compelling narrative that distinguished her own political standing from Biden’s. This lack of differentiation was ultimately detrimental to her campaign as she succumbed to defeat in the general elections to President Trump.

The author drew parallels between the unraveling of Biden’s campaign and a Shakespearean tragedy, pointing to a striking abdication of leadership starting from within Biden’s inner circle. Not one of Biden’s closest allies, it seems, pulled him aside to face the harsh reality of his age and his evidently reducing command over campaign affairs.

Biden’s team were seemingly blinded by their misplaced belief in his abilities. ‘The inability of any of those [staffers] to sit the president down and say, ‘Look, you need to look at this clear eyed and realize that you’re going to be 86 years old and you’re not up to this and everybody knows it.’ That never happened,’ the author noted.

As per the author’s narrative, Biden had been demonstrating reasonable governance behind closed doors, regardless of public opinion about his policies. However, as a campaigner, Biden was but a pale shadow of his former self. Deterioration was apparent from his 2020 campaign and continued its downward spiral till the premature end of his reelection bid.

The scars of past political battles also seemed to have taken a toll on Biden. The author broached the topic of Biden’s troubled relationship with Barack Obama, who had allegedly favored Hillary Clinton as the nominee in 2016. The wound, it seemed, ran deeper than one could imagine, serving as a possible driver for Biden’s relentless and directionless push for another term.

Unfolding parallel to Biden’s failing campaign was the tactical positioning of Kamala Harris. The Vice President discreetly started her groundwork, reaching out to Democratic political operatives to understand the rules of engagement and rally support to step into Biden’s shoes.

However, despite her behind-the-scenes preparations, Harris seemed ill-prepared to answer the million-dollar question: ‘How would you lead differently from Biden?’ Unable to distinguish her proposed leadership from Biden’s failed reign, Harris effectively sealed the fate of her campaign.

Still, the author concedes that despite the apparent strategic blunders, Harris was undeniably loyal to Biden. This loyalty, however, seemed to offer little solace as both Biden and Harris found themselves on the losing side of the 2024 elections.
