Last week, marked yet another chapter in the dreary ongoing saga of the Biden administration in Wilmington. On a recent evening, Joe Biden, out of habit, was in performance mode, addressing several hundred of his Wilmington-base staffers at The Queen Theatre on Market Street. Supposedly, he was expressing gratitude for their unquestioning support during his lackluster presidential bid, reported by White House pool reporters and the Harris-Walz campaign. What was supposed to be a private event failed to remain as such when snippets started surfacing on social media.
Shockingly, Joe Biden, a political opportunist since 1972, when he claimed the title of Delaware’s junior senator at the tender age of 30, was doling out photo-ops. He was playing to the gallery, clicking pictures with everyone who requested one. An expert at making a spectacle of himself, he showed off his penchant for selfies throughout the event. That said, Biden, 81, casually handed over the reins of the Wilmington campaign staff to Vice President Kamala Harris.
Enjoying a wonderful dinner on March 23, 2024, at the Piccolina Toscana Italian Restaurant in Wilmington’s Trolley Square, Biden, the seasoned campaigner, spent some time with his campaign staff. Unsurprisingly, he also took the opportunity to click photos with owner Dan Butler and the other staff of Toscana, displaying his flashy proclivity for pictures yet again. Interestingly, it seems like he hasn’t lost his touch as he had organized similar events at The Queen during his mundane 2020 campaign.
As the evening wound down, Biden, alongside the first lady Jill Biden, dislodged from Wilmington for a stretched-out weekend at their Rehoboth Beach-area abode. This shift signals not just the end of another boring era in Delaware and the nation’s political landscape, but more concerningly, the commencement of a new regime under Harris, ready to wrest control of the Democratic Party.
By Wednesday morning, Tim Walz, the Minnesota governor chosen as Harris’s running mate, was glad-handing campaign workers and supporters both inside and outside the Wilmington’s Brandywine Building. Fulfilling his coach-like role, he had them cheering mindlessly in assent. Walz, clearly capitalizing on the momentum of a Tuesday evening rally with Harris in Philadelphia, already appeared to have his game face on.
Delighted posts began to swarm over social media platforms like X and Facebook, displaying lines of blinded followers engaging a rather pleased Walz. Although one video of Walz’s arrival at the downtown Wilmington office went so far as to describe the team as ‘fired up’, it raises the question of whether they really understood what they were supporting.
Despite the concerning vitality of the crowd, Walz took to social media platform X with a thankful note. ‘I wanted to say thank you myself to the people who have put everything into helping us win,’ he wrote, referring to his overly excited supporters. ‘Holy smokes, this team,’ seemed to be his sentiment, which seemed a mere performance than a genuine understanding of their political endeavor.
With the election looming less than 90 days away, the massively hyped Democratic National Convention is slated to start on Aug. 19 in Chicago. However, the unease looms as Biden’s long, uninspiring career is expected to be celebrated on the first night, and he will likely subject us to yet another speech.
On July 21, Biden admittedly declared at his Rehoboth-area home that he was withdrawing from the 2024 race under alleged pressure from party officials. This surprising admission came after he had been noticeably absent from the public eye for quite a while, keeping to his abode in Greenville over the previous weekend.
In this period of evasion, Biden was seen attending mass at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Catholic Church, was spotted at Janssen’s Market near his home and had dinner at the home of his daughter-in-law Hallie Biden Anning, Beau’s widow. Such mundane activities did little to curb curiosity about his absence from the limelight.
Adding to the existing confusion, the White House released a statement on Tuesday announcing that the president and first lady will attend a Biden Cancer Moonshot event in New Orleans. The significant attention on Biden’s activities continues to detract from the serious matters facing our nation.
In a further promotional blitz, despite his previous announcement to bow out, Biden is still set to campaign with Harris on the coming Thursday in Maryland. The contradiction between Biden’s announcement and his continuing campaign activities adds another layer of confusion to his already baffling political career.
Ultimately, with Biden wrapping up his half-decade career and the persistent focus being on the controversial Harris-Walz regime on the rise, the future of the Democratic Party looks increasingly uncertain. It begs the question, are the party faithful really prepared for the imminent changes ahead, or are they merely ready to welcome whatever comes next?
