The violent altercation that took place within a government structure, carried out by a mob, some armed and bearing symbols of questionable patriotism, was a disturbing sight indeed. Their intent was to disrupt a constitutionally mandated procedure, flouting the tenets of democratic tradition. A stark number among these marauders turned violently against law enforcement personnel, with declared intentions to eliminate government officials. This significant act of disruption at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, aiming to discontinue the ratification of the 2020 election results, fetched them the praise of former President Donald Trump. Astonishingly, more than 1,500 of these rioters, despite either admitting guilt or being convicted of federal crimes, were absolved by Trump.
The crowd of protesters primarily consisted of individuals whose allegiance prominently rested with Trump, most of them belonging to the white demographic. The unrest did not limit itself to Washington. Just last week, a vast number of individuals staged protests outside a federal establishment in Los Angeles, raising a clarion call to stop immigration raids. These demonstrations followed the surprise arrest of many individuals working at various places across city sections densely populated by Latinos.
Fueled by law enforcement’s use of tear gas, sound grenades, and rubber bullets against an Australian reporter, the situation rapidly spiraled out of control. Shockingly, these instances of excessive force used by authorities even targeted a union leader, leading to his detention. In the aftermath of these incidents, the protests expanded, engulfing numerous other cities.
While the unrest in Los Angeles was still at its peak, Trump deemed it a convenient pretext to deploy National Guard soldiers to the city. This was a decision made against the wishes of not just the city’s mayor, but also the Governor of California. In addition, Trump ordered around 700 Marines to descend upon the city, ostensibly to protect federal immigration officers.
The precedent set when a nation’s president employs military forces against his own citizens crosses a dangerous boundary. It’s a precarious situation that’s exponentially exacerbated by incendiary and inaccurate rhetoric around immigrants, who make undeniable contributions to our communities and economies. While the violence and destruction in Los Angeles unequivocally warrant condemnation, one must recall the initial sparks that ignited these protests.
These protests germinated as a peaceful rebuttal to increasingly aggressive and frequent immigration raids. Perversely framed as a measure against dangerous criminals, these crackdowns indiscriminately apprehend immigrants or those who appear to be immigrants. It’s crucial to counter prevalent misinformation that creates an atmosphere of fear and misunderstanding.
Claims made by Trump and his administration painting an image of some form of ‘foreign invasion’ usurping the U.S. is definitely not grounded in reality. While some protesters in Los Angeles were seen waving flags from Mexico, Guatemala, and other countries, this doesn’t imply that they’re representatives or instigators backed by these countries. Importantly, these countries have shown no endorsement for any rioting or looting that occurred in Los Angeles.
Drawing a parallel, it must be noted that the fact that some individuals involved in the January 6 protests brandished confederate flags or used U.S. flags to assault law enforcement does not mean that their actions were endorsed by all Americans or Southern states residents. Los Angeles and California as a whole are not under siege by protesters or immigrants, despite what some might suggest.
Analyzing geographical details, Los Angeles covers an expanse greater than 500 square miles, with protests concentrated in smaller areas within the city. California is home to the U.S.’s largest immigrant population, corroborating that it is far from being in any state of siege. Moreover, despite the large immigrant populace, it has a robust economy, ranking as the world’s fourth-largest, having recently overtaken Japan. It moreover benefits from lower crime rates compared to numerous other states.
Excessive immigration crackdowns under the Trump administration, rather than migration itself, are the true threats unraveling our societal fabric. Bizarrely, even when compared to the reign of former President Joe Biden, deportations were more frequent under Trump. Yet, Biden’s measures continue to draw criticism despite this fact, illustrating the skewed perception fostered by political bias.
A patron of a restaurant in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, epitomized the sentiment surging amongst everyday people following an ICE raid. “It’s truly a challenge to believe that my pizza maker of 25 years is a gangster and terrorist, while the person who turns up wearing a mask and body armor in an unmarked car to arrest him is the presumed hero,” Connor Simon expressed to a local TV channel. Astonishingly, the restaurant’s owners were under the belief that the employees detained were legally staying in the U.S. under asylum.
Since long, Trump has sought an excuse to expand his powers, to manipulate military strength for suppressing protests that he disapproves of. The real concern lies in his increasing apathy towards laws and established norms and his escalating utilization of force, including military force, to smother dissent and disagreement. This seems far more terrifying than any perceived threat from the immigrants forming an integral part of our communities.
