According to David Axelrod, the strategist responsible for orchestrating President Barack Obama’s successful campaign against Hillary Clinton in 2008, he suggests that President Joe Biden should consider conceding defeat in light of recent polling data indicating a significant disadvantage for the Democratic president against former President Donald Trump in five out of six swing states.
In his analysis of X, Axelrod suggests that President Biden should contemplate the possibility of relinquishing his position and providing an opportunity for the younger cohort of Democrats to compete for their party’s candidacy.
“Only @JoeBiden can make this decision. If he continues to run, he will be the nominee of the Democratic Party. What he needs to decide is whether that is wise; whether it’s in HIS best interest or the country’s?” Axelrod asked in a thread on X obtained by Fox News.

Axelrod continued, “It’s very late to change horses,” but he implied that recent polling indicates that Biden is clearly having problems.
In states that he won in 2020—Nevada, Georgia, Arizona, Michigan, and Pennsylvania—the beleaguered president is now below President Trump. In Wisconsin, Biden’s lead is exactly 2%. Startling data nuggets in the numbers indicate that while Biden and Trump are virtually matched among young voters, in states where he leads, Black voters favor the Republican candidate up to 22 percent. For a Republican candidate running in the post-Civil Rights era, such sum is remarkable.
In 2008, Axelrod masterminded Obama’s strategy to select Biden as his running mate, hoping to counteract the lack of enthusiasm among white working-class voters. Although he has spent decades in public relying on his blue-collar background, President Biden, a native of Scranton, Pennsylvania, now trails President Trump by dozens of points among white voters, particularly those with less than a four-year college degree.
Axelrod continued, “Biden’s biggest liability is his advanced age.” Being the oldest U.S. president in history, Biden has made a terrible lot of mistakes, travels, and other senior moments that have solidified voters’ fears about his age and led them to feel, by large proportions, that he is unfit to serve a second four-year term. Even while voters disapprove of President Trump in large numbers, according to Axelrod, President Biden would be gravely misguided to think that the same people will not defect to his likely opponent.
“[T]he stakes of miscalculation here are too dramatic to ignore,” wrote Axelrod.
