Joe Biden’s lackluster performance as President leaves many scratching their heads. His rush into the leftist arena of politics seems a drastic departure from his moderate stance during the campaign. A crucial supporter in his campaign, interestingly, and perhaps tellingly, was Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, famous for her far-left ideology. Attempting to match strides with the progressive Sanders’ policies, Biden’s governance has been reminiscent of what one would expect from someone of Sanders’ radical inclinations.
Biden’s early decisions marked the beginning of his left-wing turn, a prime example being the selection of Kamala Harris as his Vice President. Notably, Harris was rated the most left-leaning Senator in 2019 by GovTrack.us, further underscoring Biden’s unexpected political tilt.
When Biden came to power in January 2021, the U.S. was gradually recovering from the pandemic. The unemployment rate, which had reached a staggering 14.8% in April 2020, had fallen to 6.4% by the time he took office. Likewise, the inflation rate was down to a mere 1.4%, showcasing a healthy recovery, and the GDP growth was strong at 5.2%. Despite these numbers, Biden overlooked the steady recovery.
Disregarding the nation’s economic status, Biden plunged the country into further debt by pushing a colossal $1.9 trillion spending bill through Congress. He sent $1,400 checks to individuals and funded various other programs, triggering an inflation peak never seen in the past four decades.
Not stopping at the initial expanse, Biden proposed a staggering $2.4 trillion (or $4.8 trillion if continued indefinitely) ‘Build Back Better’ bill. The bill lined up several ambitious left-wing agendas such as universal preschool, national child care centers, mandatory paid family leave, huge subsidies for green technologies, amongst other things. It was enough to scare conservative Senator Joe Manchin into derailing the bill in the Senate.
After the downfall of the ‘Build Back Better’ bill, Biden managed to salvage some pieces, primarily related to green subsidies and infrastructure spending. However, the effectiveness of these provisions is debatable, to put it mildly.
$7.5 billion was allotted in 2021 to construct 500,000 electric vehicle chargers across the country. Astonishingly, the count of successful deployments currently stands at eight. Yes, not thousand or hundred, just eight chargers. Compared to this, the result of $42 billion spent towards expanding internet access seems even more disappointing.
Despite having Kamala Harris at the helm, the internet expansion project has failed to connect a single individual or business to the internet. According to Brendan Carr, a Republican member of the Federal Communication Commission, their over-two-year effort has not yielded any connection using that money.
The broken system stems from the leftist belief that America is inherently flawed. A Gallup poll revealed an unsettling figure – only 34% of Democrats hold a strong sense of pride for their nation, a stark contrast to 67% in the Republican party. This perception of American society, laden with racial prejudice, gender bias, environmental negligence, and more, motivates them to spend massively on addressing these ‘corrections’.
As the New York Times’ Ezra Klein pointed out, this ‘everything-bagel liberalism’ that tries to solve everything with a single policy ends up achieving nothing. This ‘defect’ in their perspective suggests the failure of their policies.
Another fallout of their haste to remake America is brushing aside the legal processes. Biden’s unilateral call to spend $400 billion of taxpayers’ money to erase student loans violates Article I of the Constitution. Such decisions, taken without Congressional approval, are forces that are threatening to undermine our democracy.
From the start of his presidency, Biden’s decision to govern from the left has resulted in a chaotic, ineffective leadership. His drastic pivot from a pleasing ‘Bill Clinton-style moderate’ image to a more radical ‘Sanders-style liberal’ approach strikes discord amongst the nation’s citizens.
The promises made during his campaign hold no weight as his actions reflect a contrary strategy. There seems no end to his attempts to introduce sweeping left-wing policy changes, regardless of the practicality or the cost involved. This seemingly unending barrage of reckless left-wing policies serves only to further alarm those who once believed in him.
As the term continues, the concern only grows – where will these reckless steps take our nation? Biden’s presidency’s flight into the far-left political spectrum does not bode well for the future of this great nation, and only time will reveal the true extent of damage that these political missteps can cause.
