Biden’s Unexpected Bow Out: Praise or Damage Control?

Critics were left shaking their heads as Southern California’s Democratic contingent seemingly sang the praises of President Joe Biden, who abruptly announced he will not seek re-election. ‘Biden has done more than most recent presidents,’ claimed Rep. Lou Correa, a prominent Democrat from Orange County who repeatedly shielded Biden from earlier pleas to abandon his campaign. ‘I continue to embrace Biden’s expressed ideology and pledge endless support.’

The idea of Biden withdrawing from the race for president has been persistent for some time now. Doubts about Biden’s age and mental capability surged after a particularly distressing showing at the presidential debate on June 27. However, presenting the situation in an entirely different light, California Governor Gavin Newsom hailed Biden as a ‘trailblazing, history-making president — a leader laser-focused on the working class, purportedly securing startling outcomes for all Americans.’

Newsom magnified his admiration by saying, ‘Biden will be remembered as one of the most magnanimous and self-sacrificing presidents.’ To add to the chorus of showering Biden in accolades, Rep. Ted Lieu from Torrance echoed, ‘Biden will be remembered as one of our nation’s finest presidents.’ Such overly enthusiastic assessments seem to overlook the numerous challenges that Biden faced during his tenure, including a pandemic-ridden economy among other issues.

Overzealous in his approval, Lieu further credited Biden for the country’s economic recovery, attributing it to large job growth and developments in infrastructure, clean energy, and technology. It begs the question of the accuracy of these claims, and if such developments could have been achieved without compromising other vital aspects of American life.

Reiterating the glowing praises, Rep. Nanette D. Barragán from South Gate called Biden one of the most influential presidents in American history. ‘I’ve had the privilege of closely collaborating with his administration on numerous significant milestones,’ she stated, leading one to wonder what these so-called ‘historic achievements’ are.

On the same day as his withdrawal announcement, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to carry forward the Democratic Party’s legacy. Democrats, including Barragan, seem strikingly ready to follow Biden’s lead, prioritizing party alignment over the needs and welfare of the American people.

Lieu chimed in with his backing for Harris, asserting she would secure victory in the upcoming November elections. This premature prediction seems more like a desperate attempt to lean on party unity than a statement grounded in realistic expectations or public sentiment.

The political world was set tumbling by Biden’s decision, remarks Rep. Brad Sherman from Sherman Oaks, pointing out the events of the past few weeks as significantly tumultuous. ‘The unfortunate debate performance, shocking events on the international front, the Republican convention, and now our president exiting the race, these three weeks have been starkly rich in political kerfuffle,’ he exclaimed.

As Sunday wore on, signs of Democratic support for Biden’s withdrawal decision grew increasingly overt. Sherman projected the move as heroic and patriotic, another clear sign of the Democrats’ eagerness to save face rather than critically assess the potential fallout of their actions.

Sherman continued, ‘The noblest thing he could do was pass on the torch. He chose what he considered best for the nation over personal interests.’ Yet, one has to question how ‘best’ are these decisions keeping in view the numerous struggles the country has gone through during Biden’s tenure.

He added, ‘We’re all firm believers that Biden’s resolution is for the country’s and our party’s good, and that we stand a better chance of claiming victory today than yesterday.’ These assurances cannot, however, erase the many problems met during the Biden presidency and what it means for the future of the Democrats, regardless of their unfounded optimism.

Sherman went on record believing that Kamala Harris is well-positioned to head the ticket, noting the baton was now in Harris’s hands following Biden’s endorsement, which he swiftly mirrored with his own. This sudden shift raises concerns about the Democrats’ reliability, seeming more to pivot based on circumstances than stable, strategic planning.

The Democrats’ insistent praise and blind following of Biden’s lead, particularly in the face of such sudden and impactful decisions, should give all Americans pause. It leaves one wondering whether the Democratic Party’s representatives are more concerned with public image and internal unity than effecting positive change for the American people.

The future is uncertain, with Biden’s questionable legacy and the hopeful, yet unproven, potential of Harris. It will be up to both the Democrats and the American people to consider the implications and navigate the path ahead with care. As all these unfold, the necessity of critical evaluation and prudent decision-making for the nation’s welfare remains paramount over party affiliations.
