Regrettably, much of Biden’s legacy concerning environmental issues, reflected in the American Rescue Plan, Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, CHIPS and Science Act and Inflation Reduction Act, remains unaffected during Trump’s presidency. Countless articles have circulated emphasizing ‘Trump-proofing’ of Biden’s legacy and obstructing the agenda of President-elect Donald Trump. These attempts might gain some amortized success as the prospective administration lacks a tangible strategy, and Trump’s promises seem rather lofty.
Climate change, a pressing global issue that threatens human survival needs immediate attention. Unfortunately, Biden’s environmental legacy, immune to Trump’s policies, isn’t proving to be entirely effective. The benefits from his purported victories in sustainable energy- the American Rescue Plan, Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, CHIPS and Science Act, and Inflation Reduction Act – have spread ineffectively among states, industries, citizens, nationwide public health and economy, irrespective of political affiliations.
Even Trump’s most ardent believers have reaped the profits of these plans. Facts are what they are. They can’t be refuted. Trump won’t be able to erase all the progress made. But, Biden’s victories aren’t quite satisfactory and have been overshadowed by contradictory decisions, such as endorsing new fossil fuel leases, development, and infrastructures.
The emissions of greenhouse gases and other climate-damaging gases continue to escalate as our energy consumption outpaces the use of renewable resources. On top of that, we are increasing our fossil fuel exports without accounting for the resulting pollution. The climate doesn’t discern where the fossil fuels are burned; it simply reacts to their combustion. It is high time we solidify and fervently chase our climate goals.
Sadly, the main focus seems to be on devising strategies for climate advocacy groups to accomplish a reliable climate rather than making significant systemic changes. Another disheartening incident, reported in the hidden recesses of a newspaper section, tells the tale of an oil spill. Approximately 70,000 gallons of oil spilled in Wisconsin in November. It prompts one to question if clean up after such events can ever be 100% effective.
Mining companies now have their eye on the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Imagine the long-term damage that could ensue. Personally, echoing the growing sentiments, one would say it’s high past time we put an end to such exploitative practices. Recalling the column that triggered these thoughts, is an evocative memory of my Norwegian family’s inauguration: Nov 15, 1956. The meaning of that day sunk in much later, but the poignant emotions associated with it are palpable even today.
The author anticipates that the incoming administration would address the issue of Medicare Advantage providers taking undue advantage of federal funds through their disproportionate profit-making. She applauds a sensible suggestion that can ensure healthcare funds are directed towards patient care instead of lining the pockets of insurers. Laudable indeed! However, it’s important to prevent partisan bias in its implementation, given the political landscape.
Although personally not a Trump supporter in the 2016 or 2024 elections, any effort from his administration towards stricter regulation of Medicare Advantage providers that can reduce their wasteful exploitation of Medicare funds is welcomed. Fast-tracking such an initiative would undoubtedly help reshape our healthcare system and be an actual contribution to America.
An opinion piece published on Dec. 15 categorized Trump voters as being naive about how economic forces function, inferring their belief in his promises to reduce prices as gullibility. The author differentiates between ignorance and stupidity and their point is notable. However, these voters aren’t just inadequately informed, but are individuals striving for better lives, lured by the prospect of someone resolving their problems.
In comes Trump, who asserts that he has the solution. Yet, he fails to provide any substantial explanation as to how he intends to bring about this change. Surprisingly, the lack of a cogent explanation didn’t deter his followers. It’s interesting how his history of untruthfulness didn’t dampen their faith either. Trump’s promises were seen as answers to their problems and fair judgments were clouded by hope.
So, were the Trump supporters ignorant of the intricate details of economic factors? Probably. And was it a foolhardy move to believe in Trump’s promises without him divulging his plan? Possibly. Ignorance is one of the factors that contributed to Trump’s support base. But, recklessly believing in Trump’s claims, a person known to not always tell the truth, also seems to be a significant contributor to his support base.
Conditions at the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center remain abysmal. Our children are floundering emotionally, and all we seem to do is wait on the sides, only springing into action when it’s too late. The rise of juvenile crime rate is distressing, but patently blaming the kids for their actions is an incredibly shortsighted and lazy approach. Treating symptoms isn’t enough on its own; what we need is to challenge the pathogenic elements generating the illness.
This stands as a vivid example of the current administration’s approach to issues plaguing our society. A significant proportion of the population doesn’t believe in ‘bandage solutions.’ We need remedies that address the root causes of our societal issues. Insufficiently informed voters will vote for the candidate who gives them hope, despite the lack of any real solution offered by the politician.
Is it right to let voters remain ill-informed and capitalize on their desperation for better lives? Let’s not be quick to dismiss them as ignorant. They are victims of a larger systemic issue. However, we need a leader who acknowledges the complexity of the issues faced by his electorate and provides them with legitimate, well-planned and sustainable solutions.
In conclusion, we bear witness to an administration that seems to view matters in black and white, refusing to acknowledge the grey zones that truly define our complex socio-economic environment. We crave leadership that won’t merely resort to surface-level fixes or monetary incentives but delve deeper and bring about structural changes addressing the root cause of our societal issues.
