The Department of Transportation revealed on Friday it has terminated or withdrawn funding to a sum of 12 offshore wind energy projects. This decision aligns with the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to strangle technologies applauded by former President Joe Biden as green energy solutions. The DOT assessed the total allocation directed to these projects as an exorbitant cost of $679 million, harshly criticizing these efforts as ‘wasteful’. The focus has seemingly shifted to reinvigorating the maritime industry rather than chasing after ‘fantasy wind projects’.
It’s been observed lately that the Trump administration has progressively put a stop to or threatened mammoth wind energy initiatives, widening its reach beyond the dozen recently quashed. The Department of the Interior, on its part, zoomed in on three substantial wind farms, emblematic of the Biden era, with the intent of shutting them down.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy shared on Friday, ‘Wasteful wind projects are swallowing resources that could potentially be channelled towards reviving America’s maritime industry’. He was more than candid with his disapproval of Biden and Pete Buttigieg, who seemed relentless in their pursuit of using transportation funds to drive their ‘Green New Scam’ agenda, whilst obliviously overlooking the pressing demands of our shipbuilding industry.
‘Thanks to President Trump, our focus now is on actual infrastructural enhancements rather than illusory wind ventures that impose hefty costs while yielding scarce benefits’, Duffy added. The current standpoint of the DOT under the Trump administration puts a great emphasis on the construction of additional American vessels and the promotion of dependable energy sources.
The DOT also hinted at ‘recompeting’ the funds towards ‘critical port upgrades’ or other viable infrastructure initiatives. This proclamation comes after President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at restoring maritime dominance, dated April 9. Continually criticizing, Trump wants to put an end to Biden’s energy policies which he brandishes as the ‘green new scam.’
Biden had made the controversial choice of pumping billions into solar, wind and offshore wind endeavors during his presidency. During the twilight of his term in the Oval Office, amidst vocal resident protests, Biden granted approval for a colossal wind farm. The incumbent Trump administration has since been making moves to repeal this approval.
A criticism of the intermittent energy solutions that Biden championed was made by the Trump administration. Labelled as ‘unreliable’ and ‘foreign-controlled’, the DOI terminated any favouritism towards these technologies on federal grounds on July 30. Trump’s legislature, affectionately termed ‘Big Beautiful Bill’, is also on the path to phasing out green energy tax credits, a policy vigorously advocated for by Biden.
Offshore wind has been widely disparaged, surprisingly not just by the Trump administration but also environmentalists and fishermen over claims of it posing considerable threats to wildlife. The Biden administration was called out by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for reportedly approving some offshore wind projects without due diligence in reviewing the environmental impact.
A representative for the NOAA delivered to the Daily Caller News Foundation that ‘The steps undertaken by the Biden administration display an absolute ignorance of the years of scientific research and proficiency that underpin NOAA’s environmental protection recommendations for offshore wind projects.
NOAA scientists internally maintained records that revealed the complete disregard the Biden Administration had for NOAA’s guidelines aimed at preserving the ecosystem. The Biden administration, blinded by its greenwashing tendencies, stamped the approval on these projects without giving any consideration to the adverse effects offshore wind might have on our marine environment.
During Biden’s administration, there was a clear inclination toward green energies, largely promoted as projects that would move the country toward a sustainable future. Yet, such a preference seemed to only lead to endorsing ineffective technologies and seemingly draining funds that could be potentially employed in reviving neglected sectors.
Moreover, green energies, while propagated as an answer to climate change and environmental degradation, have seen their critics, including both environmentalists and other parties traditionally seen as opposing them. The issue of offshore wind projects, as seen from the standpoint of this charge, is one of them.
Furthermore, as revealed by the NOAA, Biden’s administration went as far as to ignore established guidelines aiming at protecting the marine environment when it approved some of the mentioned projects. The administration, seemingly blinded by ‘green’ ideologies, did not take into account the potential harm such technologies may cause.
Biden’s approach to energy policy appears to have intensified opposition rather than building consensus. Rather than pragmatically choosing the most effective means to promote greener energy, he seems to have chosen and campaigned for methods that have been recognized as inefficient and problematic. The judgment passed on Biden’s policy choice from various quarters characterizes them as not just financially wasteful but also as potential threats to the environment.
