Comedian and political commentator Bill Maher gave an unexpected nod to President Donald Trump on Friday night, applauding the commander-in-chief for successfully brokering a peace agreement in Gaza.
Speaking on HBO’s “Real Time,” Maher told his audience, “You’ve gotta give credit where credit is due. I mean, a lot of people tried to pull this off. He did.” The remark came just days after Trump finalized a historic agreement between Israel and Hamas that officially ended years of violent conflict in the region.
Maher, known for his sharp criticism of both political parties—and often of Trump himself—acknowledged the scale of the accomplishment, quipping, “After two years, the Palestinians are returning to Palestine, the hostages are coming back to Israel, and everyone’s blown away that Trump pulled it off. I don’t know why. I mean, if there’s one thing he’s good at, it’s sending people back where they came from.”
The joke referenced Trump’s immigration policies, particularly his renewed push to deport criminal illegal aliens as part of his broader 2025 border crackdown. But beneath the humor was a rare moment of genuine praise for a president Maher typically mocks.
Earlier this month, Hamas released the last 20 surviving hostages and began returning the remains of those killed during the conflict. In response, Israeli forces agreed to a full withdrawal to a pre-negotiated line inside Gaza, effectively bringing combat operations to a halt.
Trump, speaking at a summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, hailed the agreement as a turning point for the region. “This breakthrough that we’re here to celebrate tonight is more than the end of the war in Gaza,” he said. “With God’s help, it’ll be the new beginning for an entire beautiful Middle East.”
The deal is part of a broader 20-point peace framework Trump announced earlier this year, which includes phased security cooperation, economic rebuilding plans, and future diplomatic recognition steps.
Maher also noted Trump’s surprisingly high popularity in the region, joking, “He is beloved in Israel more than any other president ever, for a good reason. He also won over the Arabs. He’s the only thing besides hummus they both like.”
While Maher may not be joining the Trump base anytime soon, even his acknowledgment suggests the Gaza peace deal is not just a win for Trump’s foreign policy legacy—it’s a moment turning heads across ideological lines.
