Maryland Governor Wes Moore made it official on Sunday: he’s not running for president in 2028.
In an exchange on NBC’s Meet the Press, Moore told anchor Kristen Welker that he’s committed to seeking reelection in Maryland and intends to serve a full second term. His remarks come after months of speculation that he could be a rising star in the Democratic Party, with some insiders touting him as a potential contender to challenge President Donald Trump in the next election cycle.

“I will be serving a full term,” Moore said firmly. “I’m excited about reelection. I’m excited about what I’m going to be able to do for the people of Maryland.”
Pressed directly on whether he would consider a run for the White House, Moore didn’t hedge: “Yeah, I’m not running for president.”
Welker asked again to be sure: “You rule it out?”
“Yes,” Moore replied. “I’m not running for president.”
Moore pointed to what he framed as Maryland’s successes under his leadership — including economic growth and a reported drop in violent crime — as reasons for staying focused on the state.
“We’ve gone from 43rd in the country in unemployment to now one of the lowest unemployment rates,” Moore claimed. “We’ve had amongst the fastest drops in violent crime anywhere in the United States. Our population is growing. Maryland is moving.”
Moore has previously clashed with President Trump, most notably over crime in Baltimore. He once dared the president to walk the city streets to prove they were safe. That high-profile challenge put Moore on the radar of national media, but Sunday’s declaration makes clear he intends to remain in Annapolis — at least for now.
