In the last decade, a social deterioration has intensified within our society, going largely unnoticed by consecutive governments. The intensity of this societal corrosion is made evident through the words of our Prime Minister, who, after a national state of emergency was declared, boldly addressed the public. In no uncertain terms he asserted, ‘There will be no space for complicity in standing by amidst the rapid deterioration of societal order brought about by a minority of unlawfully armed culprits terrorising our people. The resurgence of offenses such as ransom kidnapping and other dreadful crimes led by gangs will remain unchecked no more. They will no longer be given the opportunity to consistently induce fear among peace-loving citizens, causing chaos across our nation.’ A robust dialogue indeed, that signifies the magnitude of the issue at hand.
In fact, there were unfolding threats that the police had intelligently gathered relating to an ‘organized crime syndicate’, formed by gangs, planning to inflict severe damage through assassinations, kidnappings, and armed robbery. While providing assurance to the citizens that the government had a firm grip on the situation, the Prime Minister indicated the situation was under control by stating, ‘The fact that we are able to hold this conversation on this platform, without the fear of destruction from missile attacks, signifies the successful interruption of a major catastrophic plan that was nearing implementation.’ This statement reaffirmed the strength and resilience of the government in combatting societal threats.
This sinister plan posed prominent threats to individuals within our justice system, security services, and also significant state properties. The government concluded that prompt and decisive action was indispensable to combat these severe threats. It’s a praiseworthy step taken by the governing body. However, as a community, it’s hard to ignore that this problem should have been halted long ago when warnings began to surface, specifically within secondary schools run by the government.
This major step towards societal rehabilitation is only the beginning, initiated by the Prime Minister himself. The government is in process of formulating laws to raise the legal age for alcohol consumption, marijuana usage, and gambling. This is an important strategy to protect our younger generation from damaging habits and provide them with ample opportunities to flourish. Repositioning these laws is a vital step towards achieving the transformation that the government seeks in society. This is the pathway towards a reborn society.
By taking early and decisive action, the new administration has sent out a strong message. A recent wave of teenage violence within numerous schools, a sign and catalyst of societal decay, has drawn the attention and action of the administration, accentuating the urgency of the situation. The shadow of a ‘dark decade’ continues to lurk over our nation, a time where social deterioration rose in sync with the growth of dysfunctional families, domestic violence, prejudice towards women, teen pregnancies, child mistreatment, rebellious student behavior, drug overuse, horrifyingly high crime rates and murder.
Over the course of these bloody ten years, more than 5,000 individuals have fallen victim to murder, a staggering statistic that surpasses that of New York City with its population of more than eight million inhabitants. During the period of 2014 to 2022, an overwhelming number of 5,620 reports of domestic violence were filed, predominantly by female victims. The mental and emotional scars left on victims, especially on children who witness such atrocities, raises grave questions about the future of these children.
In this light, it is crucial to address the equally alarming issue of child abuse, which has brought grown leaders to the brink of tears. As per reports, we have been facing up to 5,700 instances of child abuse reported annually since 2015. This horrific total of over 50,000 cases in the last decade includes children who have been sexually exploited by adults, sometimes even bartered for indecent acts in exchange for money. In a span of eight years, around 11,000 instances of child sexual abuse have been reported, with the majority being male perpetrators, known to the victims.
This is the haunting scope of our societal decay. This is a venom that trickles down through generations, paving the way for our crime crisis and much more. The criminals we see today are not otherworldly, they are products of certain institutions notably the home and schools. For a whole decade, the previous government permitted this state of affairs to intensify to an almost irreversible condition.
Prior to the advent of the new administration, the nation was in a downhill spiral, with decay permeating every aspect – from the economy, to the society, to the pillars of the state. There was a palpable lack of leadership and a clear absence of direction. Given our current state of affairs, the recent moves undertaken by the Prime Minister, including the declaration of a state of emergency, are certainly a promising start.
It is high time that we begin the process of national rejuvenation. The fall of our society, which has been imminent for the last decade, has finally hit an alarming tipping point. The unheeded warnings and untamed societal forces have culminated in a condition that even the Prime Minister finds hard to ignore. His acknowledgment and commitment to taking bold, decisive action against the myriad of threats plaguing our nation are testament to our society’s need for change and the administration’s resolve to trigger that change.
The subsequent emergence of an organized crime syndicate illustrates just how dire conditions have become. In the face of such chaos, however, it is promising to see signs of effective countermeasures. Our government is stepping up, showing resilience and the will to remain at the helm. Through swift and decisive action, we have so far managed to stave off the worst of these potential crises.
However, we cannot afford to grow complacent. The roots of such societal ills oftentimes lie buried in our educational institutions. It is therefore integral to our progress that structures such as government secondary schools are examined closely to nip these issues in the bud – before they grow into greater threats. While punitive action is necessary, we must also stress the importance of preventive measures. Without a doubt, a larger emphasis on prevention will not only save us from future catastrophic occurrences but also lead us to a more prosperous future.
It is evident that our nation has been marred by an era of darkness. With the growth of dysfunctional families, misconduct, and mental health issues, we now face a formidable wall of evil crimes. However, with the decisive and timely actions taken by the new administration led by our Prime Minister, the prospects of national regeneration appear promising. It is time to return the safety, peace, and prosperity to our nation – the time for national regeneration is now.
