To tackle the theft problem, Hyundai Motor America took action on its entry-level models, which were missing vital theft prevention tools like immobilizers. The company offered free software updates, ignition cylinder protectors, and compensation schemes.
Hyundai Motor America, a child firm of its Korean parent company that owns approximately one-third of Kia and shares systems as well as components, claimed that they have successfully rolled out the anti-theft upgrades to about 68% of the vulnerable vehicles that lacked them.
Broadly speaking, the United States saw a decrease of 16.6% in reported vehicle thefts in 2024, down to 850,708 units, per NICB data. This comes after the record-breaking year of 2023, where over one million cars were stolen.

Despite the nationwide overall reduction in car thefts, Washington, DC, reported the highest rate of vehicle thefts in 2024, with a count of 842 thefts per 100,000 people. However, this was still an 18% drop compared to the previous year.
Following Washington, DC, in rates of car thefts were the regions of California and New Mexico. In these regions, the data showed that theft rates averaged around 460 vehicles per every 100,000 inhabitants.
Professor Alex Piquero, from the University of Miami, mentioned the critical role that law enforcement played in causing this reduction. Their concentrated efforts to break up organized theft operations have led to tangible results.
Another factor leading to the decrease in car thefts has been the reduction in black market sales, both domestically and internationally. This perspective comes from the Council on Criminal Justice, pointing to the waning of demand in illicit automotive markets as a contributing factor.
