A late July incident in Brooklyn has resulted in charges for a 68-year-old male who reportedly confessed to causing the death of his sister, five years his junior, following an argument in the apartment they resided in together, according to the police and other investigative bodies.
Mary Fagan was discovered lifeless and unresponsive in the shared familial dwelling area, according to law enforcement records. Investigators found her in the communal living area of their unit, situated on St. Johns Place in proximity to Bedford Avenue in the Crown Heights neighborhood. The occurrence took place in the early evening hours around 6 p.m. on the 26th of July, as per the police statements.
Emergency medical responders arrived promptly on-site, where they confirmed that she had unfortunately passed away in her shared apartment.
In the beginning, investigators did not find evidence suggesting foul play. Mary’s death appeared to be devoid of suspicious circumstances, but further forensic examination led to the discovery of certain physical indications that alerted a possible non-natural cause to her passing.
A detailed analysis indicated unexplained bruises found on the victim’s neck, suggesting the possibility of strangulation, which is a method frequently associated with homicide, investigators concluded.
The Office of the City’s Medical Examiner undertook the responsibility of officially ruling Mary’s passing as a result of a homicide – the consequence of neck compression, according to a representative from the same office.
Interactions with her brother, identified as Thomas Fagan – who carried no previous criminal record – led to unexpected revelations, investigators stated. During the series of interviews conducted by the detectives, the suspect confessed to the alleged illegal act.
Thomas, the suspect, ended up getting apprehended as a direct outcome of this criminal proceeding. The police detained him during the evening hours of the ensuing Saturday, and he was subsequently charged with his sister’s murder.
Following his arrest, he was presented in court the following Sunday. There, on the premises of the courtroom, he was denied the entitlement for bail as recorded in the online register of court proceedings.
The local law enforcement unit, the NYPD, made it known to reporters that there was no record of prior notifications or escalations that could classify as domestic violence involving the siblings.
