The warmth of the sun was becoming intense as Cheesman Park began to fill up on Saturday for the Cheesman Park Art Festival, with not just art enthusiasts but their canine companions as well. The event drew a large crowd from all corners, transforming the park into an art lover’s paradise under the clear, blue sky. Both locals and visitors, anticipating an exciting weekend filled with vibrant artworks, live music, and delicious food from various food trucks, were in attendance, giving the park a buzzing atmosphere.
The festival, a much-awaited event in the community’s calendar, assembled more than 150 handpicked artists from across the nation, turning the park into a citywide art gallery for two entertaining days. An array of booths clustered in the park’s center, displaying the artists’ creations, providing a visual feast to everyone present. Meanwhile, speaking to the participating artists and admiring their display of creativity became a major attraction for many.
Entering the park, one transaction overheard was of a mother instructing her young one, ‘Use your eyes to appreciate, not your hands.’ This small exchange reflected the respect due to the displayed artworks and the intricacies involved with their creation. As they ventured further, an assembly of booths offered an engaging sight, allowing the visitors to watch the creativity unfold before their eyes.
Despite the soaring temperature, the festival saw a continuous inflow of attendees, unfazed by the heat. Adding to the charm of the event, interactions between the attendees’ dogs were quite a sight too as they sniffed each other excitedly. To keep the four-legs hydrated, ‘Puppy Water’ stations were set around the park, much to their delighted lapping.
The festival also catered to the creative appetites of children who wished to delve into art-making. Dedicated craft corners had been set up where the young ones were shown how to craft ‘hilarious monsters,’ ‘zooming rockets,’ and ‘flittering butterflies.’ There was an air of excitement as they busily engaged with the various craft materials provided, creating their pieces of art.
Amid the bustle of the festival, a pleasant harmony filled the air as The Laurie Damerson Duo graced the live stage. Their jazzy rhythms provided all present with musical respite, enticing attendees to move towards the shade to enjoy the soulful tunes. The music was an integral part of the festival, providing a background score to the beautiful canvases of creativity spread across the park.
First staged in 2013, the Cheesman Park Art Festival has become a much-loved summer tradition. The festival’s focus is on celebrating the essence of handmade art, giving attendees the chance to witness and own a range of products – from handcrafted jewellery, clothing, and paintings, to unique items such as leather bags, needle-felt creatures, and various wooden wares.
The size and scale of the Cheesman festival might not match that of the Cherry Creek Arts Festival held earlier in the month. Yet, its intimate and cozy vibe grants it a charm of its own. After all, it’s the artistry that matters, irrespective of the scale of the event!
For those who missed the prior Cherry Creek festival or those who simply couldn’t have enough of art shopping, the Cheesman Park Art Festival offered another wonderful opportunity. It continued attracting bargain hunters and art enthusiasts till 5 p.m. on the day, promising to open its vibrant doors again at 9 a.m. the next day, Sunday, July 27.
As one sauntered around the park, random sightings of dogs popping out from the festival booths offered a volley of amusing moments. These innocent interludes only added to the charm of the Cheesman Park Art Festival, creating an atmosphere of relaxed enjoyment that extended beyond art appreciation.
The first day of the Cheesman Park Art Festival concluded at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 26. However, the artistic enthusiasm was far from over. The park was set to reopen its creative gates at 9 a.m. the next day, promising another spectacular showcase till 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 27.
