Yet, amidst this political fray, legislators are not losing sight of international issues as is evident from the recent activities of Rep Ro Khanna, a Democrat from California.
Increasingly prominent in the progressive realms of the House, Khanna aspires to more significant things. His increasing vocal critique of the humanitarian crisis in Palestine, recent activities, and calls for recognition of the Palestinian state is a testament to this. A formal letter is being circulated amidst House lawmakers, which extends to President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, calling for a shift in geopolitical stance.
On another front, Trump’s latest administrative actions seem to unleashing ripples across international supply chains. The recent import tariff spike on Brazilian coffee, a move that sees China reaping the advantages and setting commodity traders on their heels, illustrates this. A 50% tariff on selected Brazilian goods that includes coffee, set to kick off on August 6, heralds a challenge for the industry.
Brazilian coffee exporters particularly face a quandary, coping with the challenge of selling the approximately 8 million bags typically bought by U.S. coffee processors each year. The tariff hike, essentially, holds the potential to realign trade routes and drive traders to source indirect entry points into the U.S.
The former president also surprised the nation by revealing plans for a grand White House ballroom, a move previously ridiculed by the Obama administration 15 years ago. This announcement comes as Republican election officials in Colorado are getting unanticipated communication from an alleged GOP consultant, claiming association with Trump’s election integrity.
Trump, for his part, shocked observers by revealing that the notorious sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein ‘stole’ Virginia Giuffre, one of his victims, from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago spa. Despite pulling in over $93 billion from tariffs as of mid-July, GOP lawmakers aren’t thrilled. They would rather allocate these funds towards mitigating the national debt dilemma, which is currently looming above $36 trillion.
With an additional $3.4 trillion predicted to add to the national debt in the next decade, principally attributable to sweeping tax and legislation changes instated in December, the Republicans seem to have their work cut out for them. The idea of diverting tariff revenue to peoples’ pockets is not gaining much traction, if any.
Meanwhile, in the Gaza Strip, the innocence of aid seekers was cruelly violated as Israeli-backed troops opened fire near two aid distribution sites managed by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. This brutal incident resulted in the death of 10 unarmed people, according to eye-witnesses and health workers present at the site.
The sudden eruption of violence occurred just a day after U.S. officials had praised the system as an ‘incredible feat.’ An innocent crowd of Palestinians, close to 19 in number, were shot dead in their quest for aid near the Israel-Zikim crossing., highlighted by Fares Awad, who heads the Gaza health ministry’s ambulance and emergency service.
