Democrat Rep. Al Green Ejected From State Of The Union After Disrupting Trump’s Address

Representative Al Green was removed from the House chamber Tuesday night during President Trump’s State of the Union address, marking the second consecutive year he has been ejected during a presidential speech.

Green, 78, stood and refused to sit as President Trump began speaking and displayed a protest sign that read “Black people aren’t apes.” The sign referenced a recently deleted Truth Social post that included a video raising doubts about the 2020 election and briefly featured an offensive clip depicting former President Barack Obama as an ape.

The White House has said the video was posted in error by a staffer and that President Trump did not see the offending portion before it was shared. The president later stated he condemns the imagery.

As Green continued to disrupt the address, the House sergeant at arms escorted him from the chamber. Republican lawmakers applauded as he was removed.

Green was also ejected last year during President Trump’s joint address to Congress after interrupting the speech and shouting from the chamber floor.

The incident occurred amid heightened tensions during the president’s record length address. Party leadership on both sides had reportedly urged members to maintain decorum, though several Democrats protested or boycotted the speech altogether.

The removal of Green once again highlighted the deep partisan divide inside the chamber during one of the most high profile events of the congressional calendar.
