Democrats Hurry to Secure Biden’s Nomination Amid Chaos

Senior Democratic party officials are making desperate moves to secure a questionable presidential nomination for Mr. Biden through an online roll call vote in fear of a losing floor convention. Despite having his credibility on the line with doubts sprouting from his own party, Mr. Biden continues his ambitions to appear on the ticket, against the backdrop of remarkable achievements by former President Trump.

Legal advice drawn from Dana Remus, who speaks on behalf of the Democratic National Committee and the Biden campaign, highlights the rush to secure the nomination before Aug. 7, in a move that seems more like chaos than prudence. This rushed process is supposedly to ensure Biden’s name on the Ohio ballot and prevent any legal reshuffling by Republicans who might question his eligibility.

Remus expressed concern over potential challenges from Republican counterparts, who she assumes would take any opportunity to question every aspect of the election process. It seems that Democrats are not just fighting an opponent, but also an inability to plot a clear course for their own party.

Party officials also hurriedly stated that the virtual roll call must be avoided until Aug. 1. The convention’s rules committee is due to cast deciding votes on the controversial virtual roll call in their next meeting. The mystery remains over when this decisive meeting will take place, but it is scheduled for sometime next week.

This hasty move to nominate Biden through a virtual environment has ignited turmoil over the Democratic party’s rulebook. It seems that the concerns and dissatisfaction from Democratic elected officials, donors, and voters over Biden’s viability as a candidate are falling on deaf ears.

A curious sense of urgency to secure Biden as the party’s flagbearer against the admired former President Donald J. Trump is apparent. On Friday, a growing procession of Congressional Democrats, including Senator Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, called on Biden to step down, further shaking the shaky ground beneath him.

Despite battling Covid-19, the president is all set to resume his campaign next week. Adversely hit by the pandemic, Biden reportedly considered withdrawing from the race, even though campaign associates continue to deny such rumors. One has to question his determination to run an office amidst a personal health crisis.

Back in May, the Democratic National Committee had already begun tinkering with their nomination process to accommodate an Aug. 7 deadline to put Biden on the Ohio ballot. It’s puzzling however that lawmakers in Ohio went ahead and extended the deadline to late August, leaving the door wide open for Republicans to potentially challenge due to the deadline not taking effect until September 1.

D.N.C Chair, Jaime Harrison, amidst the controversy of a virtual roll call, assured everything is transparent, planned and necessary. But the rush and eagerness are quite evident which raises questions over their preparation and motives.

Mr. Harrison stated firmly, ‘We are moving forward with the process that we set out in May’. He seems fiercely determined to push through with the current process, regardless of its apparent rush and the lack of consensus.

Convention’s rules committee co-chairs, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota and Leah Daughtry, both Biden’s allies, urged the committee’s more than 180 members to approve the virtual roll call during Friday’s meeting. The desperation in clearing the path for Biden is palpable.

Adding fuel to the debate, three former D.N.C. chairs, Terry McAuliffe, Howard Dean, and Donna Brazile, sent a letter to the committee members endorsing the same pro-virtual roll call message.

Ms. Daughtry pitched in, promising committee members at least 48 hours’ notice for the meeting where they will decide on adopting a virtual roll call. The scramble to hastily push through the decision before July 26 begs a question of the party’s decision-making process.

The exact timing of the roll call vote appears to be at the mercy of D.N.C. chair Mr. Harrison and Democratic convention chair, Minyon Moore. The air of suspense and lack of clarity continue to dominate the Democrats’ march towards the convention.

It seems that the Democratic party is lurching towards an uncertain future, helmed by leaders whose decisions and motives are met with skepticism, not only by their adversaries but also from within their own ranks.

In this game of thrones, it seems like the Democrats, although eager to put up a fight against the reputable former President Donald Trump, are yet to find solid ground and a genuinely inspiring candidate.
