Democratic lawmakers are under fire after unveiling plans to launch a central online database tracking Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity nationwide — a move critics say puts federal agents at risk amid a sharp rise in violence.
Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) announced Tuesday that members of the House Oversight Committee will be compiling what he called a “master ICE tracker” on their website. The tool, he said, will collect and publish tips from the public about verified ICE operations and agent locations.
“Over the course of the next couple of weeks, the oversight committee will be launching… a master ICE tracker,” Garcia said during a press conference. “We’re going to be essentially tracking every single instance that we can verify that the community will send us information on, and it will be all available in one central place.”
The announcement comes as federal data shows a staggering 1,000% increase in attacks against ICE personnel over the past year.
Attorney General Pam Bondi swiftly condemned the plan, calling it a “deliberate attempt to endanger law enforcement.”
“The Justice Department has ZERO tolerance for violence against law enforcement — we will prosecute any person who physically assaults our agents,” Bondi posted on X. “The shutdown Democrats are trying to put ICE agents at risk just for doing their jobs.”
Garcia fired back, claiming ICE’s detention of over 170 U.S. citizens disqualifies them from such protections. He escalated the exchange by referencing the unreleased Jeffrey Epstein files, posting: “Since you have the time to tweet at me — when are you going to stop covering for pedophiles and release the Epstein files?”
The day the website was announced, federal agents in Los Angeles were forced to open fire during an attempted arrest of Carlitos Ricardo Parías, a 44-year-old illegal immigrant and TikTok personality with over 132,000 followers. Parías allegedly rammed a federal vehicle during the confrontation and was shot by officers. A U.S. Marshal was also injured after being struck in the hand by a ricochet bullet.
Parías had become infamous for livestreaming and documenting ICE operations in the Los Angeles area. He now faces federal charges for assaulting an officer, carrying a maximum sentence of eight years in prison.
Federal authorities also disclosed that last month’s anti-ICE shooter in Dallas, who fatally struck two detainees while attempting to target ICE agents, used a mobile app to track their movements. That app has since been removed from Apple’s App Store.
As attacks rise and ICE faces mounting threats, critics argue the Democratic tracker will only exacerbate the danger. Proponents insist the tool is about “transparency,” but law enforcement officials warn it’s a recipe for escalation, not accountability.
