Biden’s clear shortcomings are being revealed amongst his own party. Quoted in an excerpt from ‘Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again’ by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson, former advisor to Barack Obama, David Plouffe, openly acknowledges how the party was thwarted by Biden’s endeavours. The core notion of the article, designated, ‘How Joe Biden Handed the Presidency to Donald Trump’, suggests that the Democrat’s fall from presidential power can solely be attributed to Biden’s stubborn and arrogant resistance.
Yet, curiously, such criticism towards Biden from the Left seems rather hypocritical. They conveniently lay the blame for their widespread political predicaments at Biden’s doorstep, a sign of pure illusion. The downfall of the Democratic Party’s popularity isn’t just associated with Biden’s dwindling memory; various other elements contribute as well.
Every single congressional Democrat allowed the Inflation Reduction Act, knowing full well this would lead to a surge in prices, thereby negatively impacting people’s lifestyles. The border crisis is another case of Democrats’ collective failure. Although several pre-election Pew polls showed that 78% of participants considered the border situation to be severe, no Democrat seemed aware of this reality.
The criticism of Biden also encompasses his inability to pave the way for other potential candidates. Highly ambitious Kamala Harris lusted after the opportunity, prepared to pounce regardless of Biden’s decisions. Although ensconced in the White House, she would never just step aside or let anyone undermine her efforts to secure the nomination.
Contrary to conventional wisdom, more exposure to public scrutiny worked against Kamala Harris. After an initial rise in popularity, interest in Harris waned significantly. The more she had to say, the less the public cared for her.
Harris was not alone in this failure. Every Democrat candidate had to endorse the president’s record. This issue became more prominent as his record’s popularity continued to nosedive even before the media reluctantly admitted to Biden’s evident cognitive dysfunction.
The Democratic Party completely lost their footing. Biden’s mishandling of the economy earned approval from only 36%, his bungled approach to immigration stood at 28% approval, his foreign policy skills were liked by 33%, and his handling of the Middle East barely interested 30% of the population. Despite such disapproval, elections are about competing ideologies.
When a CBS News poll showed 65% of Americans fondly remembered Trump’s economic management, compared to only 38% for Biden’s, it was clear that the Democratic leaders were in dire straits. Mainstream Democrats like Wes Moore, Gretchen Whitmer, Gavin Newsom, Andy Beshear, or JB Pritzker did not possess the captivating character or the persuasive narrative to change this tide. It was a bleak scene.
David Plouffe was among the sparse voices in the Democrat ranks that expressed doubts about Biden’s mental competence. However, until the first presidential debates in 2024, both the party and the broader media protected Biden. They would have continued to do so had he refused to debate Trump, keeping his apparent cognitive decline under wraps.
The article in The New Yorker reveals an ominous incident where Biden failed to recognize A-list celebrity George Clooney at an infamous Hollywood fundraiser, and had to be escorted off the stage by former president Barack Obama. However, mainstream media outlets persisted in discrediting the stories about Biden’s cognitive decline, further deepening the public’s skepticism.
Two days before the debate, then-Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., told reporters that Biden’s mental sharpness was at its peak. ‘He’s fine. All this right-wing propaganda that his mental acuity has declined is wrong,’ he insisted, attempting to dismiss concerns.
But in contrast to Schumer’s public proclamations, The New Yorker piece reveals his private worries, drawing attention to Schumer’s regular phone conversations with Biden, during which the president would often forget why he called or lose track of the conversation. While Schumer was not overtly worried about Biden’s mental state, ‘the optics’, as he put it, were indeed troubling.
Given that the president is the world’s most powerful person, it was astounding that Schumer, a key Senate leader, was more concerned about the appearance than the substance. This reflects a worrying trend within his party.
Comically, the Democrats, blinded by their loyalty, ended up causing their own eclipse. Their inability to accept Biden’s ineptitude and the potential damage it could wreak on their party showcases their myopic political judgement.
The Democrats, instead of introspecting or challenging their views, chose to blame their own self-induced problems on external factors. Losing sight of the actual problems at hand, they set themselves up for failure, ensuring their downfall.
