Democrats’ Stance on Gun Control: Safety or Symbolism?

In the classic film ‘Defamed Maiden’ from 1936, a character named Samuel Tracy, a grizzled newspaper editor, grapples with a routine news story. The current common tropes in news headlines usually involve phrases such as ‘Prominent Democrat Advocates for More Gun Controls.’ The specifics of which type of control seems like a spin of a roulette wheel, ending at random. Heated discussions on gun control tend to rise in the wake of incidents like the school shooting incident at a Catholic education institution in Minneapolis, or the ongoing discourse around federal involvement to curb the escalating crime rates in Chicago.

The calls for implementing stricter gun control measures are frequently heard, despite the specifics being vague. Minnesota’s Governor Tim Walz, for instance, has expressed his intention to convene a special session of the state Legislature with the goal of advancing stricter gun control laws, even though Minnesota already boasts some of the nation’s toughest existing firearm regulations.

The tragic incident at the Annunciation Catholic School involved a shooter employing a rifle, a pistol, and a shotgun, all of which were possessed legally. Despite regulations in Minnesota including licensing, registration rules, background checks, and red flag laws, the tragedy unfortunately unfolded. In the aftermath, critics note that this tragedy is often used to justify a push for additional gun control, without clear indications that proposed measures would have prevented the tragic event.

On the other hand, the state of affairs in Chicago paints a different scenario, where approximately every 19 hours and 40 minutes someone becomes a victim of homicide. Interestingly, despite leading the nation in the number of homicides, the city’s government persistently argues that the city would rival the peace of a sleepy Omaha suburb on a calm weekend night, if it were not for the influx of firearms from neighboring red states.

To track the movement of firearms involved in crimes, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATF) has initiated a program. Surprisingly, the program discovered that in 2023 the majority of guns used, were traced not to distant states like Mississippi and Alabama, but were mostly confined to Illinois and Indiana.

The gun control issue provides an opportunity for Democrats to project their concern and commitment to mitigate crime. However, they concurrently champion policies such as cashless bail initiatives, sanctuary cities that supposedly attract unauthorized immigrant criminals, and a seemingly lenient justice system with high recidivism rates.

The party is often accused of opposing the enforcement of laws against vagrancy and involuntary commitment, and reckoning crime as a societal issue. Gun control, critics argue, is likely to only impact those who abide by the law—exactly those who will most likely argue the necessity of firearms for personal protection.

As the advocates of Democratic policies warn of rising danger, those not wishing to become another crime statistic see the importance of self-defense tools. The irony lies in the purported attempts by Democrats to impede the ability of innocent citizens to exercise their Second Amendment rights.

New York’s potential next mayor, who is openly in favor of broader national gun control initiatives adds more juice to this contentious debate. Meanwhile, last month in Charlotte, North Carolina, a tragic incident occurred, wherein a young woman was fatally stabbed in the neck whilst commuting on a train.

The individual charged with the crime had an extensive history of run-ins with the law, having been arrested 14 times prior to the incident. Despite his criminal history, he was allowed to walk free the last time he showed up in court, simply by promising in writing to appear for the trial.

As the death toll continues to rise, the Democratic party seems more inclined to distance themselves from law enforcement and continue advocating for their favorite remedy – a solution with an unparalleled track record of ineffectiveness when it comes to government intervention.

When compared with their stance on gun control, even the Democrats’ approach towards tenant laws seems to be yielding better results. Despite the differences in opinions and approaches, it is imperative to remember that the ultimate goal of such discussions should be to ensure the safest possible environment for all citizens.
