Dismal Failure of ‘Tampon Tim’ as Harris’s Running Mate

The Democratic Party, seemingly running low on self-awareness, put forward Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota as Kamala Harris’s running mate in an attempt to appease male voters, a voting demographic that was proving to be a challenge for the Harris campaign. Interestingly, Walz, whose resume includes serving as an assistant coach for a high school football team, was chosen to embody the masculine strength that the campaign believed was needed to entice male voters.

The selection was puzzling for several reasons but most importantly due to Walz’s controversial stance for a proposed bill in Minnesota mandating that tampons be placed in men’s school restrooms. This stance earned him the unfortunate and somewhat juvenile moniker ‘Tampon Tim.’ He didn’t manage to meet the Democrats’ goal of projecting a ‘masculine’ image in any meaningful way, invariably contributing to their mounting issues with the male demographic.

There was a clear disconnect between their intentions and the successful execution of their campaign strategy with Walz. The strategy failed so spectacularly that Trump dominated the male demographic by a substantial 12% margin. In fact, Trump reigned victorious in the young male vote as well, a demographic traditionally leaning towards liberal ideologies.

It became evident that Walz’s presence not only failed to attract male voters but in fact led to an even larger portion of them siding with Trump. An impressive 20% of male voters aged 45-64 supported Trump. Remarkably, despite the Democrats’ attempts to use fear as a tactic, warning seniors about the supposed threats to their Social Security under a Trump administration, Trump still held a 13-point lead among male voters aged 65 and over.

In the end, the Trump campaign’s victory over the male vote resembled more of a massacre than a contest. Nevertheless, despite the glaring indications that Tim Walz’s appeal to men leaves much to be desired, he seems to maintain an unwarranted optimism about his prospects.

Walz has expressed frustrations over the Harris campaign using him merely to convey their message. Furthermore, he’s spoken about being in contention for the Democratic nomination in 2028. By refusing to learn from his failures in 2024, he is only setting himself up for similar outcomes.

Walz’s inability to understand what factors entice male voters is painfully clear. During a recent conversation with potential presidential candidate and incumbent California Governor Gavin Newsom, they discussed what the Democrats need to do. Newsom astutely identified the party’s loss of support among all subgroups of male voters, encouraging a more pro-active and respectful approach rather than constantly being on the defensive.

In contrast, Walz proposed an overly simplistic and aggressive strategy, jocularly suggesting he could ‘kick most of their ass.’ While Newsom suggested understanding and respecting voters’ viewpoints, Walz seemed to entertain the idea of a figurative WWE fight, confirming his inability to constructively engage with his voter base.

All things considered, one would expect Walz to have learned something from his previous failures. Yet, when Newsom rightly pointed out that Democrats were losing ground with male voters, Walz was quick to shift the blame to racism and misogyny.

Walz brushed off the criticisms, dismissing Trump supporters as ‘bad guys,’ and obliquely suggesting that they should be physically intimidated. His quick default to blaming racism and misogyny instead of addressing the Democratic Party’s failure to resonate with male voters only underscores his inability to reflect on his mistakes and learn from them.

In the end, it’s no surprise that Walz’s tactics and viewpoints didn’t help the Democrats win the election. His refusal to acknowledge and deal with the root of the problem signals that he’s bound to repeat the same mistakes.

Witnessing his persistent misunderstanding of the demographic he claims to represent, one can’t help but be perplexed at the Democrats’ belief in his potential to appeal to male voters. The importance of truly understanding the beliefs, needs, and concerns of the electorate seems to be lost on Walz.

Given this analysis, the repeated consideration of Walz for high-ranking positions within the Democratic Party remains one of the more bewildering aspects of their strategic planning. Should Walz continue down this path without meaningful introspection, it’s reasonable to assume that his ventures in the political landscape will remain unsuccessful.
