Dismal Review: Biden’s Age and Ineffectiveness Cause Trump’s Reelection

The evident turmoil and radicalism that have defined the initial months of the second Trump administration have somewhat lulled the Democrats’ will to rehash the 2024 campaign. A sense of disappointment is shared within Democratic ranks, given their inability to prevent Trump’s second coming. However, they remain predominantly consumed by their current fight against Trump while concurrently preparing for the approaching off-year and midterm elections. Assessments of previous election strategies have taken a back seat as the next presidential election in 2028 is yet a distant concern.

Various Democrats openly express cynicism towards the 46th president, blaming Biden’s age, and the condition of his mental faculties as key factors that resulted in Trump’s re-election. The anger amplified when Biden decided to contest re-election and further prolonged his withdrawal for over three weeks post-debate, creating profound unrest.

Frictions emerged amongst Democrats, taking them back to the anxiety-ridden times of the previous year when Biden’s catastrophic performance at a presidential debate resulted in a party-wide meltdown. This was later followed by Biden’s late withdrawal from the campaign, intensifying the concerns.

Suggestions that Vice President Harris’ campaign was doomed due to Biden’s adamant denial of his diminishing candidacy suitability and presidential effectiveness seems at the least, conjectural. Those who lay the blame of Trump’s second term on Biden’s personal shortcomings gloss over the more plausible explanation, which is that his public policy failures made reelection or even succeeding in pushing his vice-president to election notably strenuous.

When dissecting the subject of immigration and inflation, Biden’s administration stands testament to abject failure. A timely move to curb the overwhelming influx of cross-border migration was deferred by far too long. The topic became so controversial, to the point where neither Biden nor Harris had the courage to bring it up.

During the Biden administration, there was a sharp increase in living costs. The administration’s ineptitude became synonymous with one widely suspected cause, uncontrolled government expenditure. This exhibit of fiscal mismanagement originated from the enthusiasm surrounding the party-line approval of the American Rescue Plan and later the Inflation Reduction Act.

These expenditures were aimed, primarily, at recuperating the economy from the throes of the pandemic-triggered downturn and to address tangible infrastructural and environmental needs. However, they served mostly to bolster Republican assertions that Biden’s administration was a massive exercise in partisan governmental overreach.

The spending spree inadvertently gave Trump an opportunity to portray himself as the one capable of restoring the economy to its former state during his administration. Regardless of the fairness of such a position, the electorate had largely formed a negative opinion of the Biden-Harris policy agenda by 2024, explaining the president’s dipping job-approval numbers into the high 30s.

Insiders in the Democratic party at the time privately confessed that almost any candidate from the Republican party could have surpassed Biden in the polls with ease. Biden’s age and mental acuity were certainly issues, but even a younger and more vigorous Democrat with the same record and policies would have found it a tough battle – proving that the problems were deep-rooted and systemic.

Although there are suggestions that the flaws associated with Biden’s leadership had a tangible effect on his presidential decisions leading to flawed and unpopular policies, these remain unsubstantiated. The Democratic party is largely in agreement with the majority of the policies implemented by the 46th president.

If the Democratic party continues to overlook the deficiencies and lack of popularity of many of these policies they wholeheartedly supported during Biden’s presidency, history is likely to repeat itself. Furthermore, the claims when fully articulated might demonstrate how Biden’s dwindling political acumen affected his decision-making capabilities, thereby resulting in erroneous and universally disapproved policies.

The laser-focus on blaming Biden’s personal characteristics alone risks underplaying the broader policy debacles under his administration. By not examining these policies critically, the Democrats may remain blind to their failures and doomed to repeat the same political mistakes.

The Democratic party continues to be entrenched in the trenches, focusing on their daily battle with Trump and the upcoming off-year and midterm elections. The reevaluation of the party’s presidential coalition and rebuilding strategies are less of a concern at the moment. The disappointment over allowing a second Trump administration, however, continues to lurk under the surface.

The second term of Trump brought in its wake an evident air of regret among Democrats. While self-blame over their inability to stop Trump from a second stint laps under the surface, the Democrats seem more embroiled in the daily tussle with Trump, leaving little time for introspection. Yet, the 2028 presidential election is still far off to really spur serious self-evaluation within the Democratic party.

The fears about Biden’s age and mental state that were beginning to make cracks within the Democratic party finally came to the surface after the election results. Not only did his decision to recontest magnify the intra-party dissatisfaction, but his delay in bowing out of the race also sent the party into a frenzy of anxiety.

Though concerns about Biden’s declining political acuity may have some basis, blaming the second term of Trump solely on this factor can seem over reductionist. The unpopularity of many policies, underlined by a consistent lack of effectiveness, also contributed to the comprehensive failure of Biden’s administrations.
