Newly appointed DNC Chair Ken Martin is wasting no time revealing his strategy to take on President Donald Trump’s administration—and it involves doubling down on Washington’s favorite weapon: unelected experts and bureaucrats.
In an internal memo titled “Democrats Will Fight Against Trump’s War on Working People,” Martin claims the Democratic Party will reposition itself as the voice of America’s workers and unions. But beneath the populist packaging is a familiar playbook—more central planning, more government interference, and more reliance on backroom advisors rather than elected leadership.
Martin, a former union organizer, launched into a laundry list of grievances against Trump’s pro-growth, pro-efficiency agenda. Among his primary complaints were the removal of National Labor Relations Board member Gwynne Wilcox, the rollback of burdensome Obama-era worker regulations, and efforts by the Trump administration to streamline federal agencies and renegotiate collective bargaining agreements with federal employees.
He singled out several top Trump officials—Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and Education Secretary Linda McMahon—as supposed enemies of labor. But it was his focus on Elon Musk, tapped by Trump to lead the Department of Government Efficiency, that drew the most fire. Martin accused Musk of leading a “war on the working class” and warned that his influence could lead to dismantling key agencies and gutting labor protections—never mind the fact that Musk’s companies employ tens of thousands of Americans and pioneer industries that the U.S. leads globally.

Despite a booming job market and rising wages under Trump’s economic policies, Martin insists the GOP is waging “a war on working people.” Ironically, while accusing Republicans of favoring billionaires, he proposed empowering union leaders and D.C. insiders—many of whom haven’t punched a timecard in decades—to dictate economic policy on behalf of the working class.
Rather than focus on empowering small businesses, reducing inflation, or encouraging innovation, Martin’s memo suggests Democrats will lean heavily on labor unions and federal bureaucrats to shape the party’s agenda heading into 2026. He vowed to “elevate union workers and labor leaders” into party decision-making roles and to use the DNC platform to fight what he calls the administration’s “anti-labor agenda.”
Martin concluded with a classic progressive rallying cry: that “collective power is greater than any billionaire,” ignoring the fact that under Trump, American workers—union and non-union alike—have seen increased opportunity, higher wages, and renewed respect for their contributions to the economy.
As the 2026 midterm season approaches, Martin’s vision makes one thing clear: Democrats aren’t just running against Trump—they’re running against the very economic policies that have reignited American industry, cut unemployment, and returned pride to the American workforce. Whether voters will buy into a platform driven by unelected “experts” and union bosses is another question entirely.
