UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was accused of insider trading and fraud by the Department of Justice before he was assassinated on Wednesday in Manhattan.
Thompson, 50, was shot dead in what NYPD officials believe was a targeted attack as he exited the Hilton hotel before an investor conference. His killer remains on the loose.
Last year the DoJ launched a probe into whether the nation’s biggest insurer, led by Thompson, was unfairly restricting competitors and running a monopoly.
Then in October, the City of Hollywood Firefighters’ Pension Fund in May initiated a complaint against the company against Thompson and other executives, accusing the CEO of failing to tell investors about the federal probe before he unloaded over 31 percent of his stock, taking in $15.1 million in proceeds.
In legal documents, investigators said that Thompson and other company execs sold over $117 million worth of UnitedHealth common stock during the four-month period when insiders knew about the federal antitrust investigation but the public did not.

Judge in Hunter Biden tax case blasts Joe for ‘rewriting history’ as he slams son’s pardon
The presiding judge in Hunter Biden‘s tax fraud case said he would accept the pardon issued by his father but slammed President Joe Biden for trying to ‘rewrite history’ in his reasoning.
Both cases against Hunter – the conviction in June of lying on a federal government form to buy a gun and also possessing the firearm while abusing drugs, as well as the tax fraud guilty plea in September – are being closed out by the ruling judges.
District Judge Mark Scarsi in Los Angeles indicated he would dismiss the case once the pardon is formally received in a blistering five-page order.
Scarsi savaged multiple aspects of the pardon, however, and was critical of the president’s assertion that his son was singled out for political reasons, saying two judges had rejected similar arguments from his defense attorneys.
‘The president’s own attorney general and Department of Justice personnel oversaw the investigation leading to the charges,’ wrote Scarsi, who was appointed by Donald Trump.
Scarsi wrote that Biden’s pardon can only mean that ‘in the President’s estimation, this legion of federal civil servants… are unreasonable people.’
Scarsi also suggested that the pardon may be unconstitutional because of its specific dating back to January 1, 2014, which some have theorized may be to protect Hunter’s actions on behalf of Ukrainian gas company Burisma.

Will a presidential pardon save Hunter Biden?
DOJ guidelines require that pardon applicants demonstrate rehabilitation, show acceptance of responsibility, and have completed their sentence — standards Hunter could not possibly meet, given his ongoing legal woes and unresolved investigations. Yet Garland didn’t just bend the rules; he let them snap entirely to accommodate the president’s son.
Hunter Biden’s slate may now appear clean, but this pardon doesn’t erase his political liabilities. He can no longer plead the Fifth if called to testify before Congress, and Garland’s departure removes the safety net shielding him from subpoenas or charges of lying under oath. Joe Biden may think he has closed this chapter, but all he has done is open a new one. Congress and the public will write the next pages, and they won’t go easy.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams Says Daniel Penny Did ‘What We Should Have Done as a City’
Penny is on trial for the death of Jordan Neely, a homeless man whom he subdued with a chokehold as he was having a violent outburst on the subway last May.
Adams argued that the mental health system had failed Neely.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, publicly rooted for Daniel Penny’s acquittal before the jury began deliberations on Tuesday.
“You have someone on that subway who was responding, doing what we should have done as a city in a state of having a mental health facility,” Adams added.
The mayor continued, “Those passengers were afraid. I’ve been on the subway system. I know what it is as a police officer to wrestle or fight with someone. It is imperative that we look at the totality of this problem.”
Adams said that he hopes the jury heard “all the facts” and that they will make the right decision.
“Based on all the facts that’s laid out, a jury of his peers will make the right decision. I don’t want to prejudge that,” Adams said

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared an “emergency martial law” on Tuesday without providing clear reasoning. Sources say that Yoon fears impeachment from the opposition party and this declaration is merely a way for him to buy time. “
Martial law would have prevented an immediate impeachment, or at least that is what Yoon had hoped. Under martial law, the National Assembly is severely limited, and it would be difficult to hold impeachment proceedings. Civil liberties were stripped from the people, who were unable to protest or organize to call for an impeachment. Yoon could have used the military to prevent any dissent. He has already painted his opposition, who hold a majority in parliament, as pro-North Korean communists intent on destroying the nation.
The people of South Korea were caught off guard by the emergency declaration. Still, the president insisted it was necessary to protect the people, rather than himself, from a fair democracy.
Yoon has used every trick in the book. He has declared that he is protecting the people when in fact he is protecting himself.

Judge Orders Fani Willis to Release All Communications with Jack Smith and J6 Committee
A judge ordered Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis to release all communications with Jack Smith and the House January 6 Committee.
Earlier this year conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch asked the Superior Court of Fulton County, Georgia, for a default judgement against Fani Willis refusing to answer its open records request.
“Defendant has not filed an answer and no answer has been served upon [Judicial Watch].… Defendant’s answer was due 30 days after service, or on April 10, 2024. Pursuant to [Georgia law] the case automatically became in default when an answer was not filed by the due date. Kash Patel, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the FBI, was reportedly informed by the bureau recently that he had been the target of Iranian hackers.
The hackers may have gained access to some of Patel’s communications during the commission of the cyberattack, CNN reported on Tuesday.
The attack targeting the incoming FBI director would mark the latest attempt by Iranian hackers to infiltrate Trump’s associates. nd the Trump transition team did not respond to The Post’s requests for comment.

Trump’s transition team has chosen to raise funds entirely from private donations, sparing taxpayer dollars and avoiding red tape. Predictably, Democrats are exploiting this decision to launch a renewed attack on the president-elect’s supporters. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., is amplifying baseless claims of nefarious influence by Trump donors, while Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., sent a letter to the Biden administration expressing alarm about the Trump transition team’s rejection of past transition practices.
Importantly, the Trump transition team has agreed to disclose their donors and reject funding from foreign sources. The left remains unsatisfied because transition officials have not offered details of when the disclosures will be made, nor how detailed they will be. Yet, considering the left’s history of weaponizing the government against conservatives, Trump’s instinct to protect his supporters is more than warranted.
