Ellen DeGeneres confirmed over the weekend that she and wife Portia de Rossi moved to the United Kingdom in response to President Donald Trump’s re-election.
Speaking at a live event in Cheltenham with broadcaster Richard Bacon, the former talk show host said, “We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in.’ And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here.’”
The 67-year-old comedian praised her new surroundings, saying life in the U.K. was simpler and more pleasant. “It’s absolutely beautiful,” DeGeneres said. “The villages and the towns and the architecture – everything you see is charming… it’s clean… everything here is just better.”
The couple relocated in November, shortly before Trump’s second term began. DeGeneres noted that Portia flew her horses overseas and that they’ve since settled into country life with chickens — and briefly, sheep.
She also touched on her legacy and the backlash from her daytime show, saying, “I hate that people think that I’m [mean] because I know who I am. I’m an empathetic, compassionate person.”
When asked about future plans, DeGeneres said she’s considering a U.K.-based talk show but is taking her time. “I do like my chickens,” she joked, “but I’m a little bit bored.”
