The renowned entrepreneur, Elon Musk, recently shared his insights regarding the challenges he faced while fulfilling a key role in Donald Trump’s administration. Without providing explicit details, Musk acknowledged that he had occasionally contributed to his own difficulties, suggesting that he had been ‘trenching my own pitfalls rather proficiently than my adversaries.’ Amidst plummeting approval ratings, Musk identified the harsh political landscape as an amplified adversary conducting a ‘massive discrediting offensive’ against him with ‘scant defensive pushback’ on his side.
His voice echoed in response to a ‘public sentiment gauge’ released by poll analyst Nate Silver, which highlighted disheartening statistics showing mere 39.6% of the US population holding an approving view of Musk. In contrast, about 53.5% expressed unfavorable perceptions. The tracker, which was initiated in January 2024, indicates a net approval rating of -13.8% for Musk, suggesting a notably negative perception.
This downturn in Musk’s favorability began after Silver started tracing the Tesla founder’s popularity score, which opened at a modest 5.9%. The downward drift got momentum post-Musk’s endorsement of Trump in July 2024, subsequently steepening when Trump assumed the nation’s presidency and spearheaded the establishment of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Musk, who was a senior figure in DOGE, has recently announced his departure from the government entity.
The public disapproval intensified after Musk implemented massive layoff campaigns, affecting a significant number of federal employees, including veterans amidst his department’s initiatives to restructure and streamline the government apparatus. Musk, in a conversation with media, implicated the layoffs as the root cause why a segment of society harbors ‘murderous intent’ towards him.
According to him, ‘When you stop the fraudulent flow of money into certain pockets, people tend to get agitated.’ Explaining further, Musk said, ‘Their murderous impulses arise from me intercepting their deceitful ways, and their animosity towards Tesla stems from our collective efforts in curbing unwarranted government waste and corruption. I suppose their maliciousness speaks to their character, and malevolent people are prone to doing harmful things.’
Furthermore, Musk’s engagement in politics seems to be significantly impacting Tesla’s commercial success. The company’s January sales in Europe experienced a sharp drop of nearly 45% compared to the same time last year, while its competitors observed an average sales increase of around 37%. Tesla’s market value showed a staggering reduction of about 46% from its historical peak of $1.5 trillion on December 17th to its current $811 billion valuation.
In reaction to this, Trump attempted to steer the narrative by highlighting the prospect of electric vehicles and by buying a Tesla car himself. At a conference with his ‘Primary Ally’, Trump proclaimed his intention to label anyone perpetrating acts of violence against Tesla automobiles or their dealer networks as ‘local terrorists’.
In mid-March, it was revealed that Trump had notified his close allies and cabinet members about Musk’s impending exit from DOGE. Musk, who is also the head of SpaceX and the wealthiest man in the world, is poised to return to the corporate world very soon.
Stemming from his official appointment as a unique government employee, Musk was originally scheduled to conclude his term in May. Yet, unforeseen circumstances and mounting controversies have instigated Musk to advance his departure from the government department.
