The narrative of Elon Musk’s attitude towards artificial intelligence has been anything but muted, shifting from a stark sceptic to an ardent supporter. Now, the unpredictable tech magnate is advocating for a powerful new AI capability: a high-speed video generation tool used in the creation of celebrity deepfake adult content. The feature, Grok Imagine, was unveiled recently to a broad audience and quickly gained unprecedented traction, with over 34 million images created within just two days.
This innovative software requires users to enter a text-based instruction to produce a static image almost immediately. The resulting images can subsequently be converted into brief video clips. Among the four available modes it offers, ‘Spicy’ mode disproportionately aroused public curiosity. This mode can transform seemingly benign image themes into explicit content.
What sets Grok Imagine apart from other AI video editing tools is its ability to accept input text that includes well-known figures. This controversial function has led to the unsettling visualization of some world-renowned women in explicit scenes. The disclosure of Musk’s Grok feature coincides with a fervent ongoing discussion about AI within the entertainment industry, following a series of labor strikes.
This contentious rollout takes place in the backdrop of recent legislation aimed at curbing the distribution of non-consensual explicit imagery, with penalties now associated with such actions. Prominent individuals, who themselves haven’t been spared from Grok’s deepfake tech, have emerged as vocal proponents of the new law.
To fully understand the capabilities of this tool, we decided on a neutral theme that involved featuring celebrities on a red carpet – a commonplace public domain where individuals have the autonomonous control over their appearance. The experiment also considered individuals who have been open critics of AI, irrespective of their gender.
The idea was to generate prompts featuring those celebrities who have expressed concerns over the potential harm inflicted by such intrusive technology. Their vocal stand against such misuse of tech serves, in theory at least, as a check and balance for those who might misuse their image in the name of AI advancements.
Grok has so far not commented on the issue. The company has made its feature freely accessible to all its users, and has also announced that it will be available more publicly soon, a move that could potentially scale its impact even further.
In addition, the company has given assurance that the quality of the videos generated by the tool will be improved upon swiftly. However, the company has remained conspicuously silent on whether or not it intends to implement safeguards to prevent misuse.
