Elon Musk could be remembered in many ways through the lens of history, yet a possible narrative might be: ‘The individual who revamped already available technologies, but with lesser efficiency.’ His automobiles have a tendency to malfunction catastrophically, his social media network is brimming with toxicity, and his AI has openly identified itself as ‘MechaHitler.’
Musk has a track record of expressing interest in resurrecting Vine, the briefly flourishing yet much-adored video platform, but he hasn’t done it yet. Nevertheless, he now proposes a novel approach to reignite the Charm of Vine. As per his claims, ‘We aim to revive Vine, but this time, it will have a touch of AI.’
Opaque about specifics, Musk did not elaborate on what this ‘AI touch’ would actually entail, leaving it open to speculation. Nonetheless, it hardly seems like a stride towards making Vine any better. The incorporation of artificial intelligence in the realm of video content is not a new concept and is already saturating viewers’ menus with low-quality content.
In the meantime, others have carried the torch of Vine’s short-form video ethos in the guise of Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and, most notably, TikTok. If Musk is hinting at his revamped Vine version possessing AI tools that allow users to produce AI-driven content within the app, it might offer a slight departure from the current norm.
However, when it comes to AI-enabled video editing tools, potential users are already spoilt for choice. There’s a plethora of generative AI video editors available out there. The true essence of Vine lay in its ability to enable real people to create genuine content; blending music, executing tricks, planning practical jokes, and crafting humour – all within the confines of six-second videos.
Consequently, the prospect of watching a six-second AI-generated video isn’t exactly electrifying.
