The ongoing concealment of Joe Biden’s deteriorating mental and physical health, only recently being disclosed by a few quarters of the media that once partook in it, strongly brings to mind a situation from over a hundred years ago. It was on October 2, 1919, when President Woodrow Wilson suffered a stroke that resulted in his incapacity to perform his professional duties effectively. His wife, the First Lady Edith Wilson, was quick to hide the true state of her husband from the press and the public.
Edith assumed numerous roles of the President, effectively acting as a stand-in President behind the closed doors. She even attempted to conceal Wilson’s paralysis by covering his left side with a blanket as a part of her well-executed plan. Wilson’s doctors, too, played an integral role in this cover-up.
Reading about this in books, we learn about the frustration felt by Congress members who were denied access to the President. Eventually, a delegation from the Senate was formed, and a senior aide at the White House was made aware of their intent to visit the President. Anticipating this visit, Edith and a few members of Wilson’s staff devised a ‘dress rehearsal’.
Their aim was to ensure Woodrow Wilson would appear cognizant and actively involved during the senators’ visit. Ideas of placing him on a beach chair were discussed but eventually, they decided to prop him up in bed. The Democratic Party’s publicist was also brought in to manage this elaborate show.
Fortunately, for the group orchestrating this façade, Wilson was having one of his better days when the senators arrived. He engaged with the senators and even brought some humor into the interaction. When a senator said, ‘We have been praying for you, Mr. President,’ Wilson wittily replied, ‘Which way?’
To all intents and purposes, Edith Wilson became the first female President of the United States. She controlled who had access to her debilitated husband, took care of state matters, and effectively ran the executive branch for close to two years. When questioned, she would claim that she was not making decisions for her husband but merely acted as a ‘steward’. A term ironically similar to what is used in reference to Biden’s status by his supporters today.
This historic tale from a century ago appears to be playing out in a strikingly similar fashion in our time. With slight modifications, it’s quite parallel to the script followed for the concealment of Joe Biden’s declining health, the conspiracy by a section of his staff who aided in engineering it, and the denial by the media, who casually dismissed any concerns surrounding the health of the President.
Despite the glaring signs of Biden’s waning health, his proponents relentlessly fostered the illusion that he was ‘as sharp as a needle’ and ‘fully functioning’. Now that the narrative is unravelling, Democrats are trying to sidestep the issue, urging reporters to ‘move on’ to the future and avoid dwelling on the past.
Republicans should stand firm and not allow this evasion to take place. It’s doubtful that Democrats would have let go of the issue had the roles been reversed, as evidenced by the fact that they impeached Donald Trump as many as three times during his term based on insubstantial grounds.
The House Oversight and Accountability Committee announced recently its plans to conduct hearings on this suspected cover-up. Individuals suspected of being part of this conspiracy should be summoned to testify under oath about the extent of their involvement and why they felt compelled to deceive the American people.
Jill Biden, the current First Lady, should also be included in these testimonials. Her role in this unfolding saga is reminiscent of Edith Wilson from the past. Under oath, they will be bound by law to present the whole truth or face penalties associated with perjury.
A crucial question that needs to be asked is why the 25th Amendment wasn’t invoked to relieve Biden from his office given his health concerns. The American public deserves to know the absolute truth, not merely read about these machinations from certain media outlets that were also part of the cover-up and are now attempting to absolve themselves.
The truth should not be obscured by the stain of deceitful storytelling or covered with a veneer of respectability. These deceptive practices, designed to maintain appearances rather than serve the best interests of the nation, should be brought to light.
It’s time to dismantle the walls of these carefully staged charades and expose those who perpetuated them. Only then can the people regain their confidence in the principles of honesty, transparency, and accountability that define a true democracy.
