The FBI has dismissed 10 agents and analysts who were involved in former Special Counsel Jack Smith’s classified documents prosecution of President Donald Trump, according to a bureau spokesperson.
The firings come amid renewed scrutiny of investigative actions taken during the Biden administration. On Wednesday, reports revealed that the Department of Justice issued subpoenas in 2022 and 2023 to Kash Patel, now serving as FBI director, and Susie Wiles, now President Trump’s White House chief of staff, as Trump’s campaign activity was accelerating.
Patel told Reuters that agents sought his phone records “using flimsy pretexts and burying the entire process in prohibited case files designed to evade all oversight.” In a statement, Patel called the subpoenas “outrageous and deeply alarming,” adding that it was unacceptable for prior FBI leadership to secretly target him and Wiles.
An FBI official told The New York Post that the subpoenas were part of what was described as “a massive targeting operation” that may have extended beyond the two Trump officials.
The discovery reportedly came from files labeled “Prohibited,” similar to materials previously uncovered in burn bags at FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C. Those earlier materials were said to include information related to the Trump-Russia investigation and alleged efforts by Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign to connect Trump to the Kremlin.
The FBI Agents Association sharply criticized the dismissals. In a statement, the organization said it “condemns today’s unlawful termination of FBI Special Agents,” arguing the firings violate due process and could weaken the bureau by removing experienced personnel.
“These actions weaken the Bureau by stripping away critical expertise and destabilizing the workforce,” the association said, warning that the move could undermine recruitment and national security efforts.
The bureau has not released further details about the internal review that led to the dismissals or whether additional personnel actions are forthcoming.
