Former FBI Director James Comey Pleads Not Guilty to Federal Charges

Former FBI Director James Comey entered a not guilty plea this week after being indicted on two federal counts: making false statements and obstruction of justice.

The charges stem from Comey’s 2020 testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, where he was questioned over his role in the FBI’s handling of the investigation into then-candidate Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign and alleged ties to Russia — an investigation President Trump and many Americans have long decried as baseless political warfare.

The case was brought to a grand jury shortly after the Biden-era U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Erik Siebert, was replaced by Trump-appointed White House counsel Lindsey Halligan. The indictment was reportedly rushed through ahead of a looming statute of limitations deadline next Tuesday.

Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed the charges in a statement, declaring, “No one is above the law. Today’s indictment reflects this Department of Justice’s commitment to holding those who abuse positions of power accountable for misleading the American people. We will follow the facts in this case.”

President Trump, who has repeatedly called out Comey for politicizing the FBI during his administration, welcomed the indictment but said more should follow.

“It’s not a list, but I think there’ll be others,” Trump told reporters. “They’re corrupt. These were corrupt, radical left Democrats — Comey, frankly, is worse than a Democrat. I’d say the Democrats are better than Comey.”

He continued, “They weaponized the Justice Department like nobody in history. What they’ve done is terrible, and so I hope, frankly, I hope there are others because you can’t let this happen to a country.”

Comey has not yet made a public statement about the charges. U.S. District Judge Michael Nachmanoff has set the trial date for January 5, 2026. The high-profile case is expected to become a major flashpoint in the ongoing reckoning over the conduct of federal intelligence agencies during and after the 2016 election.
