Former Yankees Star Mark Teixeira Wins GOP Primary In Texas Congressional Race

Former Mark Teixeira, a longtime New York Yankees first baseman and MLB All-Star, has won the Republican primary in Texas’ 21st Congressional District, launching the former slugger from the baseball diamond into the political arena.

Teixeira, who previously played for the Texas Rangers and later became a key member of the New York Yankees during their 2009 World Series championship run, leaned heavily on his biography during the campaign. He framed himself as a political outsider with executive experience gained through business ventures after retiring from baseball.

Throughout the primary, Teixeira focused on traditional Republican priorities, including fiscal discipline, border enforcement, and reducing federal spending. He also called for extending the tax cuts enacted under President Donald Trump and pledged to roll back what he described as burdensome regulations on small businesses.

Border security became a central theme in the race, particularly given the district’s location in Texas. Teixeira voiced strong support for increased funding for Border Patrol personnel, expanded physical barriers along the southern border, and backing for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The congressional seat opened after Rep. Chip Roy decided not to seek reelection and instead launched a campaign for Texas attorney general in 2026.

Teixeira will now face Democratic nominee Kristin Hook in the general election. Hook previously served as a policy fellow for Elizabeth Warren and was also the Democratic nominee in the district in 2024, where she lost to Roy by 25 points.

Texas’s 21st District stretches from parts of Austin through the Hill Country and into San Antonio’s northern suburbs. While historically a Republican stronghold, demographic changes and suburban shifts have made the district more competitive in recent election cycles.

Teixeira enters the general election with high name recognition thanks to his successful baseball career and time playing in both Texas and New York. That profile may help him attract national donors and energize voters unfamiliar with traditional political candidates.

Still, the race will test whether a first-time candidate with celebrity status can translate popularity into political success. If the primary results are any indication, Republican voters appear willing to give the former Yankees star a chance to step into a very different kind of spotlight.
