From Chart-Topper to Convict: A Rapper’s Downfall

An artist, who was in the spotlight during his high school years with a particular hit song that stormed the internet back in 2015, has unfortunately been sentenced to three decades in jail. This sentence was passed following his confession of causing the death of a relative. Songs that gain popularity on the internet can often be the start of a successful career, however, sadly, this was not the case for this Atlanta based rapper. Merely a few years following his global recognition, he found himself caught in a web of legal issues.

At the tender age of 17, he had produced a song that had an infectious tune that had people all across the globe tapping their feet. His song maintained a top position on the Billboard Hot 100 for a commendable six weeks. One might have expected his substantial success to then lead him further into the reputable world of music. However, the subsequent years were marred by a number of run-ins with the law, starting in 2020.

On the 28th day of August, 2020, he happened to find himself in trouble with the law for the first time when he was arrested and charged with an offence related to causing physical harm to a spouse or cohabitant. His troubles seemed not to end there, as the very next day he found himself behind bars, yet again. This time, he was charged with trespassing. He had purportedly entered a stranger’s residence whilst in possession of a hatchet, whilst in search of his female partner.

The events took an even darker turn in the new year, on January 21, 2021. He was taken into custody and was held in an Illinois prison after being charged with one count of murder. This followed after the local police department had responded to a distress call in the wee hours of the morning, which reported gunshots fired.

On the 11th of June, the artist, aged 27 years at the time, met with the harsh liquidation of a 30-year sentence for the fatal shooting of his cousin. He stood in the dock, pleading guilty, yet maintaining that his mental illness was a significant factor in his actions. The charges he pleaded guilty to included voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during a criminal act, and the concealment of a death.

In conjunction with his admittance to the crimes, he struck a plea deal which led to the dismissal of an additional charge of murder. His sentence was issued following an emergency response to a residential area following reports of gunshots. Upon arrival, authorities discovered a bleeding victim, shot in the face and leg, lying the street.

The scene painted a sombre image as he was declared deceased right on the spot. Representations made on behalf of the detained rapper suggested that he had been grappling with severe mental illnesses in the years preceding the tragic event.

In the course of their investigations, the police were able to locate 10 shell casings near the victim’s body. Nearby security footage further complicated the case, highlighting a vehicle that hurriedly left the scene post incident.

In a shocking revelation, a family member of the victim later disclosed that the victim was last seen in a white vehicle, adding a substantial clue to the investigation. Utilizing the latest technology, the authorities were able to cross-check this information with GPS data. This established that a white vehicle was indeed present at the scene of the crime during the precise time period of the highly unfortunate shooting.
