A 40-year-old man identified as Rolbert Jaochin has been charged in connection with a deadly attack outside a gas station in Fort Myers, Florida, where authorities say a woman was killed in a violent early morning incident.
According to investigators, the suspect allegedly struck the 51-year-old victim multiple times with a blunt object in the parking lot of a Chevron station shortly after 7 a.m. The woman was found unresponsive at the scene and later pronounced dead by first responders.
Witnesses told police the suspect had been seen moments earlier damaging a vehicle while holding a mallet and a knife before turning his attention to the victim, who had exited a nearby store. Authorities said she did not appear to pose any threat at the time of the attack.
Law enforcement later located the suspect in the surrounding area and took him into custody. Officials said he was identified in part due to prior encounters with police.
Through an interpreter, the suspect was advised of his rights and later admitted involvement in the killing, according to court records. He has been charged with homicide and criminal mischief related to property damage.
Officials have not publicly identified a motive, and the case remains under active investigation. The victim, described as a mother of two, has not yet been formally named by authorities.
Federal immigration authorities have lodged a detainer, and officials indicated the suspect could face removal proceedings depending on the outcome of the criminal case.
The incident has drawn attention from federal and local officials, who say the case underscores ongoing concerns about violent crime and coordination between agencies as the legal process moves forward.
